VFL Tigers snare third straight win

VFL coach Tim Clarke has labelled Sunday’s come from behind victory over Port Melbourne as “one of the best” he has been involved with in his three years at the helm.

A strong contingent of AFL-listed players played a large role in the win, which saw the home side down by 19 points late in the game, before slamming on six goals to two in the final term.

Clarke applauded his players on their resilience and ability to adjust to anything the game threw at them.

“The boys showed great character towards the end,” he said.

“The first half we only had two rotations because of a few late withdrawals and a guy going down because of concussion.

“For the boys to change positions, to adjust to what they hadn’t trained during the week, and then to finish the way they did, showed huge character.

“It was really pleasing because a lot of individuals played well, the team started to play well and we just kept fighting all day.”

The game was an arm wrestle early, with both teams struggling to create scoring opportunities despite constant forays forward.

The lead changed hands many times in the first half before Port Melbourne managed a goal on half time to see them take a seven-point lead into the main break.

Port Melbourne started to build a lead in the third quarter, but a third goal to Liam McBean and a magnificent goal from the boundary to Sam Lloyd swayed the momentum briefly back in Richmond’s favour.

McBean went on to finish the game with five goals, two of which came at crucial moments in the last quarter.

After a brief surge from Port Melbourne in the final quarter, Richmond managed to charge back and seal the win.

Matt Dea was a standout for the Tigers, collecting 35 disposals and taking 12 marks.

Clarke was quick to praise the efforts of the defender, who has performed at a consistently high level all year.

“He’s been banging on the door all year for senior selection. We keep hoping he’s going to get a senior game because he is playing AFL standard footy,” he said.

“Unfortunately he hasn’t been able to sneak into a backline that’s been really settled and that’s a really good thing for our footy club that he’s putting that sort of pressure on.”

Captain Jaryd Cachia lead the way in the midfield with 29 disposals and six clearances, and he was supported by Chris Knights (28 disposals) and Matt Arnot (26 disposals).

Richmond’s return to the ME Centre after several wins on the road was bolstered by the return of Reece Conca and Jason Castagna, who have both had lengthy stints on the sideline.

Each played a half, and Clarke commended the players for their efforts.

“They both played fantastically,” he said

“Reece had 15 disposals in the first half and Jason had 15 in the second half so they combined to be a great player for us.

“Reece is really important for our footy club, and to see him with his movement around the ball today was terrific.

“And Jason, the way he goes about his footy and the way he takes the game on, we’ve got a real player in him, and we’re really excited about what he’s going to bring in the future. He’s a very good footballer.”

Richmond will face Sandringham next Saturday afternoon at the ME Centre.

Matt Dea
35 disposals, 12 marks

An outstanding performance.  With 35 disposals and 12 marks – many of those coming as the result of well-read, strong interceptions from opposition kicks – he’s really pushing hard for senior selection.  He’s using the ball well, he’s defending well, and he’s doing everything that we’re asking him to do.

Chris Knights
28 disposals, 4 clearances

Played three quarters and then came off early in the fourth due to fitness management, following his lengthy injury lay-off.  Is continuing to impress.  He’s running in really strong patterns, winning his own ball well, as well as one-on-one contests, and we’re really excited to see him playing the brand of football that he is at the moment.  He also hit the scoreboard two or three times, which is important for him.

Matt Arnot
26 disposals, 5 tackles, 5 clearances, 1 goal

Played half-back at the start of the game and then went on-ball in the second half, where he provided us with significant drive.  His work around the ball and stoppages was excellent, and it was a big reason we were able to run over the top of Port Melbourne in the last quarter.  To go into the midfield, after not having played there for a few weeks, and impact the way he did, was fantastic. Really pleased with his last month of football.

Sam Lloyd
19 disposals, 2 goals

Continued his impressive form in the forward line.  Has been playing really well at VFL level over the past six weeks.  Always manages three or four shots for goal, and always wins critical contests.  Also is using the ball well.

Liam McBean
16 disposals, 8 marks, 5 goals

A key performer up forward.  We’ve been asking him to get more involved in critical contests and marking situations, which he was able to do.  He took four or five strong, contested marks, and hit the scoreboard as well, finishing with five goals.  They were AFL-standard goals at important times.

Jason Castagna
15 disposals

Was very good coming on after half-time in his first game for several weeks following an injury lay-off.  Played half-back and through the midfield.  Won plenty of contested ball and gave us plenty of drive off half-back with his hard running.  Is a really important player for us.  Over the next few weeks, it’ll be good to see him get more game time and, hopefully, start pushing for senior selection.

Reece Conca
15 disposals

Very excited about his comeback following a lengthy absence due to a hamstring injury.  Had 15 touches in half a game, and his movement was the factor that stood out the most. We’re really looking forward to seeing what Reece can do over the next couple of weeks in his transition back to AFL level.

Conor Menadue
15 disposals

Played his best game off half-back for the year.  A really solid performance defensively, and he started to get more of the ball in the first half.  It was really good to see his connections with our other backmen start to happen, which is something he has been working on over the past few weeks.

Dave Astbury
12 disposals

Was a valuable contributor playing both back and forward.  He’s certainly proven that he can be the target we need when he’s playing in the forward line.  And, we have full faith in him when he’s needed across the backline.  We’re really excited about the form he’s is in at the moment . . . he’s yet another player just waiting for an opportunity at senior level.

Ivan Soldo
9 disposals, 15 hit-outs, 1 goal

Really solid performance in the ruck.  Continues to improve each week.  We feel that his development at VFL level should mean that he will stay in the team over the next couple of weeks, rather than go back to the under 18s.  We’re really excited about what he’s bringing.  He took a couple of very good marks and kicked a goal.  It shows he has the capacity to develop into a quality ruckman for the Club.

Matt Thomas
8 disposals, 4 tackles

Got knocked out early in the match.  Had a really good start, with eight touches in the first quarter and plenty of involvements around the contest, so it was a shame to lose the services of such a strong, valuable player so early.

* It’s not always about possessions for the guys playing VFL.  It’s about how they play their footy. It’s about how they’re running around the footy and how they look – are they ready for AFL football.

* I think Chris Knights has proved over the last couple of weeks he’s getting to the stage where the coaches can look at him and say I think he’ll be able to handle AFL football. I’m really excited about that and over the next couple of weeks, as long as he can keep putting together good solid performances, I think he’ll be putting the pressure on the guys playing upstairs.

* Reece Conca - it’s the best I’ve seen him move when he’s played VFL footy in the time I’ve been here. He really worked hard to contests and he got involved in contests.  He’s got to clean up a couple of things in his game in the next week or two before he transitions into the AFL team. It was really exciting to see Reece come back the way he did.

* Jason Castagna came back after half time and he looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. He played through half back and through the midfield and was outstanding.

Not a bad effort after 4 or 5 weeks off, coming on after half time and getting involved like he did.

Can anyone tell me if we can still promote a rookie? From memory we have promoted two players due to long term injury but were we also able to promote another after the bye rounds?

I'd presume he was kept aside as 23rd man for the seniors at Etihad, just in case one of the selected 22 got injured during the warm-up.
