---------------------------------------------------------------

A young Richmond side has been defeated by a more-seasoned Fremantle outfit in their opening match of the NAB Challenge.

The Dockers didn't miss a beat early as they kicked the opening seven straight goals of the game at Mandurah's Rushton Park to set up an eventual ten-goal win.

It took until the 12-minute mark of the second quarter for Kane Lambert to release Connor Menadue into space for the Tigers to get their first goal, with Menadue making no mistake on the run from distance.

That major seemed to spark the visitors into action as snapped goals from Adam Marcon and Troy Chaplin followed shortly after in a period of dominance for the young cubs.

The tall-timber of the Dockers came to the fore from that point on as Matthew Pavlich and Matt Taberner marked strongly for multiple goals, while the Tigers' forward line was missing the experience of Ty Vickery and Ben Griffiths who both left the field through injury.

Shaun Grigg and Reece Conca were the leading ball winners for the Tigers with over 20 touches each, while Marcon, Corey Ellis, Oleg Markov and Mabior Chol impressed over the four quarters, with the latter getting just reward with a goal in the fourth term.

The experiment of using Troy Chaplain up forward is worth persisting with for the Tigers. He played most of the match up forward and fought a lone hand at times after Ty Vickery and Ben Griffiths spent large chunks of time on the bench due to head knocks. He kicked a goal and worked hard. The Tigers should stick with it.

NEW FACES

Oleg Markov and Mabior Chol caught the eye. Sudanese born Chol kicked a goal in the last quarter and took three marks up forward, while Markov got plenty of the ball and used it well. Jacob Townsend was quieter than last week's intra-club with just 11 possessions.

Dockers down young Tigers in Mandurah

HE may have a wing named after him at the ground, but that didn’t stop Fremantle Docker Hayden Ballantyne from getting injured at Mandurah’s Rushton Park.

The lively small forward is in doubt for Round 1 after suffering a suspected left hamstring injury in the Dockers’ 60-point NAB Challenge thrashing of Richmond on Friday.

He sprinted to catch an opponent early in the second term and pulled up short, looking a dejected figure heading into the changerooms and taking no further part in the match.

Richmond wasn’t without injury worries, with Ty Vickery and Ben Griffiths’ afternoons ending early due to concussion.

Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe had a delayed start to the match, warming up on his own at half-time before coming on in the second half.

Fyfe was on the ground for 15 seconds before getting his hands on the ball, finishing with 18 possessions including an equal game-high 11 contested.
Other Stories

Michael Walters (21 touches) showed he’s got what it takes to become a regular in the middle, producing a brilliant performance.

Lachie Neale’s 29 touches was the most for any player, while second-year midfielders Lachie Weller (12) and Connor Blakely (16) pushed their case for more senior games.

Former captain Matthew Pavlich was the main focal point up forward, winding back the clock to boot four majors from his 18 disposals and 10 marks.

There was a lot to like about Freo’s top draftee Darcy Tucker, who gathered 21 touches off the half-back line in his first hit-out in purple.

Tucker was the better of the first-round draftpicks ahead of his former North Ballarat Rebels teammate, Richmond’s Daniel Rioli (four touches).

Rioli, wearing the No. 17 made famous by his great uncle and Norm Smith medallist Maurice, struggled to have an impact on debut despite plenty of gametime.

It was boys versus men on paper and the 14.6 (90) to 4.6 (30) scoreline reflected that.

Richmond’s Tiger Cubs, missing star on-ballers Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Brett Deledio and Shane Edwards and bookends Jack Riewoldt and Alex Rance, were no match for an experienced Fremantle outfit.

The Brendon Lade-coach side, with an average age of less than 23, blooded nine players yet to taste senior footy compared to the Dockers’ two.

Mature-aged Nathan Broad showed some positive signs in his return to Western Australia, while Connor Menadue should add to his five senior games from last season.

Former GWS Giants hard-nut Jacob Townsend was sound defensively with seven tackles.

Usual backman Troy Chaplin had a go up forward in the first half and bagged a goal with a clever rove and snap.

Shaun Grigg led the Tigers’ possessions with 24, followed by WA products Reece Conca (20) and Kamdyn McIntosh (18).

It took until the 12-minute mark of the second term, and seven Fremantle goals, for the visitors to find a major.

Three of Richmond’s four goals came in the second quarter.

-------------------------------------------------

The pre-season of Fremantle's Hayden Ballantyne has hit a hurdle with a hamstring injury forcing him out of the NAB Challenge clash with Richmond in Mandurah on Friday night.

The Dockers' small forward lasted only until midway through the second term when he left the ground – and he clearly wasn't happy, which will spark questions of how bad the injury is.

He was going pretty well until then, along with Michael Walters, setting a cracking pace for a first round pre-season clash.

The mindset of Ty Vickery was a little harder to determine as he left the Perth south-suburban ground with concussion just before quarter-time of the Tigers thumping 60-point loss to the Dockers.

It appeared an innocuous incident in a pack, but it was enough to keep the tall forward from returning.

His loss hurt the Tigers as far as the result went. They were already missing Jack Riewoldt and were playing Troy Chaplin in attack – who with 14 goals from 207 AFL games, isn't known as a goal kicker.

When Chaplin went back into defence for the third term, the Tigers didn't score at all.

During this term, the Dockers' midfield took control, which is no coincidence as that was when Brownlow medallist Nat Fyfe joined the game.

The Tigers were missing Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin, Anthony Miles, Brett Deledio and Shane Edwards which didn't help.

The difference in experience shone through. Fremantle was allowed to amass 192 uncontested possessions up to three-quarter-time, which resulted in a 48-point lead.

The Tigers had a couple of other players who will return to Melbourne sore too.

Ruckman Ben Griffin will have a sore head after he ran into Fremantle giant Aaron Sandilands during a stoppage in the third term and was left sprawled on the ground.

As he headed to the bench (again not returning), he was followed by defender David Astbury, who was nursing a sore hand. He was able to return during the last term, though.

The Tigers had nine players in their side who haven't played an AFL game yet. The Dockers only had two, and had just nine players on the ground who didn't play against Hawthorn in the preliminary final loss last season.

The Tigers top draft pick from last season, Daniel Rioli, picked up at No.15, found the going a bit tough. He had only one possessions till the seven-minute mark of the final term, as the Dockers lead reached 10 goals. And he'd spent a heap of the time on the ground.

Rookie Adam Marcon caught up with the pace of the game during the second term, and kicked a goal during a purple patch in the second term for Richmond when they kicked their only three goals of the first half, in 10 minutes. He finished the game with 12 touches and five tackles.

Another rookie, Mabior Chol, showed glimpses of some athletic ability and was rewarded with a late goal.

The Tigers GWS recruit, Jacob Townsend, would have pleased many at his new club, finishing the game with seven tackles.

Fremantle look to have found another midfielder in Darcy Tucker, who was picked up at No. 27 in last year's draft (from North Ballarat, the same club as Rioli). Although he turned the ball over a couple of times, he earned most of his 21 possessions and looks to have a lot of time and poise once he gets it.
