NORTH Melbourne's forward pack led the way as the Kangaroos enjoyed a runaway 70-point win over an injury-plagued Richmond in Hobart.

It was carnage at times at Blundstone Arena on Friday night as the Roos demoralised the Tigers 18.16 (124) to 7.12 (54).

North booted five goals in less than 10 minutes at the start of the third quarter to open a 57-point margin from which Richmond never recovered.

Before play had even started the Tigers lost defender Dylan Grimes to a suspected hamstring complaint.

He was the first of four Tigers to fall, with just one fit player left on the bench by the final siren.

Steven Morris was stretchered from the ground with a knee injury nine minutes after the first bounce.

Key forward Ben Griffiths was visibly in pain, grabbing at his ankle, and taken off mid-way through the third quarter, while Nick Vlastuin was sidelined with concussion after knocking his cheekbone.

Despite missing star ruckman Todd Goldstein - ruled out an hour before play due to a knee injury suffered last round - North Melbourne shone.

Club stalwart Brent Harvey, playing his 420th game, found the middle pegs four times, bringing up his 500th goal.

Daniel Wells was valuable for the Roos with 30 disposals and three goals.

Majak Daw, who replaced Goldstein, finished with 19 hit outs and a goal in front of a record Hobart crowd of 17,844 on a chilly night.

When the Tigers managed possession they scrambled kicks and quickly lost the ball.

Missed opportunities were costly for Richmond in the first quarter with Ty Vickery, Corey Ellis and Kane Lambert each missing goals that would have kept Richmond up to speed.

Their best included Shaun Grigg with 38 disposals and Shaun Hampson with 51 hit outs, while Jack Riewoldt and Vickery top-scored with two goals each.

NEXT UP
North Melbourne has another serious test taking on a Geelong side keen to re-establish its claims as a flag chance, while Richmond will hope to rekindle its slim finals chances when it hosts Gold Coast at the MCG.

Roos run riot over wounded Tigers

Herald-Sun
4 June 2016

THIS time there was no request from Damien Hardwick to call the game off.

Instead, as Richmond’s season took a dramatic plunge into the abyss, there were seemingly no words.

Because this was no pre-season run-around; it was a Friday night football catastrophe. Hobart’s big night was Richmond’s fright night.

And at the end of it all, the only thing colder than the weather was the Tigers’ finals hopes. North Melbourne had put them on ice with a 18.16 (124) to 7.12 (54) trouncing.

Any hope another mid-season resurgence can again take Richmond to September appears shot.

In bitterly cold and dewy conditions the Tigers couldn’t keep their feet, couldn’t find a target coming out of defence or going forward, were outnumbered at the contest and couldn’t stick a tackle. They were putrid.

To top it all was a casualty list to complete the night from hell. Dylan Grimes strained his hamstring before the first bounce, Steven Morris hurt his knee minutes later, Nick Vlastuin copped a game-ending concussion and Ben Griffiths suffered a nasty ankle injury.

But it would be rich to say it was even close to the reason Richmond lost this game. That came down to effort and desire.

The Tigers were jumped early and never recovered.

North veteran Brent Harvey, who kicked four goals, said the 10-1 start has set the team up nicely.

“Winning form is always good form. We’ll go back and review the game pretty closely and see what we can take out of it. It’s a big challenge next week. It doesn’t get any easier for us,” he said.

Harvey praised the performance of Daniel Wells, who finished with 29 disposals and three goals.

“It’s his polish and ball use. The boys love having him in the team,” he said.

North led the inside 50m count 20-7 at quarter-time and kicked six of the first seven goals.

When Richmond’s brief resistance ended with first-quarter misses from Ty Vickery, Kane Lambert and Corey Ellis it was effectively game over.

The Kangaroos amassed 45 more possessions than Richmond, but still laid 33 more tackles. It happens rarely, but is significant when it does.

North’s veterans were dominant.

The Tigers were concerned about Jarrad Waite and sent Alex Rance to keep him under control. So Drew Petrie provided the avenue to goal with 10 touches and six marks on David Astbury by halftime.

Ben Cunnington had five first quarter clearances, but Wells, Harvey and Nick Dal Santo were ripping Richmond to shreds on the outside.

The Tigers had three goals to show for a stagnant, mistake-riddled first half, but things soon went from bad to horrific.

Like the first term, North started the third in devastating fashion, kicking five goals in the first nine minutes.

Wells was sensational with 30 possessions, Dal Santo had 33 at 82 per cent efficiency and Andrew Swallow had a “triple-double” with 28 touches, 11 tackles and 10 clearances.

Sam Gibson went to Brandon Ellis and nullified him while collecting 20 touches.

There was no Todd Goldstein, no Brad Scott, no worries. Then there’s the Tigers, who are consumed by them.

This was a worst-case scenario for Richmond – a thrashing that left at least three players with serious injury concerns and hopes of playing finals football looking remote.

After losing their first match this season to Sydney, it was a return to business-as-usual for ladder leaders North Melbourne, who cleaned up the Tigers by 70 points in Hobart on Friday night.

The Kangas had concerns before the game, with Majak Daw replacing star ruckman Todd Goldstein (knee) in the selected team and coach Brad Scott having to stay in Melbourne because of a virus.

Roo Sam Wright joined a host of Tigers on the injury list when he slipped in the final term and had to be helped off the ground.

But Daw stood up well in just his 18th senior game, while Richmond were dealt blow after injury blow.

Just two minutes before the starting siren defender Dylan Grimes withdrew with a hamstring injury, leaving Troy Chaplin scrambling to change and warm-up in the rooms on his own.

He was needed – minutes into the game brave small Steven Morris went into a marking contest and landed awkwardly, with Richmond staff carrying him off on a stretcher with a suspected knee injury.

Nick Vlastuin was forced off with concussion and to add to the Tiger misery, Ben Griffiths was carted away in the third quarter with what appeared to be ankle injury.

The Roos looked dangerous from the first bounce – Daniel Wells, Shaun Atley and Brent Harvey kicked quick goals before Jack Riewoldt managed the Tigers' first, their only major score for the quarter.

Whether it was the cold Hobart night or the injuries, Richmond seemed in shock, too often allowing their opponents to find room where they should have been applying pressure and coach Damien Hardwick appeared to be letting them have it at quarter-time.

They played with more intensity in the second, boosted by a timely goal from Sam Lloyd, then another from Brett Deledio.

But any momentum they could muster was stifled by skill errors, particularly poor kicking, which meant they struggled to string possessions together.

Evergreen Kangaroo Brent Harvey, still uncannily quick and crafty at 38, kicked goal number 500 for his career in the final quarter, then minutes later strolled into the goal square unchallenged for 501.
