Police investigating crowd clash between Geelong Cats and Richmond supporters at Simonds

POLICE are calling on footy-goers to assist with the investigation into a fight that broke out in the stands of Simonds Stadium at the weekend.

The incident occurred during the fourth quarter of the Geelong and Richmond clash and involved supporters of both teams.

It took place at the northern end of the ground, near the Tigers cheer squad.

Corio Senior Sergeant Craig Stevens said investigations into the physical and verbal altercation were ongoing.

“We’re appealing for witnesses to contact the Corio station with information or footage that might assist,” he said.

“The victim has made a statement and the offender has been identified. Police spoke to all parties on the night. No charges have been laid at this stage.

“Independent witnesses are encouraged to come forward to help establish the sequence of events.”

Minor injuries were suffered by the Geelong supporter and Richmond cheer squad member involved with bystanders also injured.

Kardinia Park Stadium Trust boss Michael Brown said potential consequences will be considered once the matter is resolved by police.

“We’ve got a series of policies that allow us to expel people from the stadium for periods of time, that hasn’t been contemplated yet,” Mr Brown said.

“We’re working with police and the Geelong Football Club to assist with their inquiries and are hopeful sooner rather than later we will have an outcome.”

A code of conduct outlined on the Cats website says members must behave in accordance with club, AFL and venue regulations when attending games.

“Behavioural standards must be adhered to at all times as anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated,” the website said.

“Geelong Cats reserves the right to cancel or suspend memberships at their discretion for any reported or observed breaches of the member code of conduct or for behaviour not in line with the clubs values.”

Everyone's Is soft nowadays. I remember when esky's were allowed into the ground.
After half time you'd see the odd fight and the real action would start by 3 quarter time.

The cops would come and we'd all sing them off.

Wasn't a real day out at the footy unless there was at least half a dozen blues in your general vicinity and at least a two litres worth of gob aimed in your general direction...

I had family there and said the geelong crowd was feral. Obviously every team
Has some feral supporters but they said they were especially bad. Just no good if you have kids wth you

I was there, at the other end of the ground than the RFC cheersquad and the abuse that went on all day was disgeraceful

So bad in fact that one Geelong supporter apologised for the abuse we copped (we = Tiger fans in the vicinity)

Been there many many times

Last week is the worse it's ever been ... copped my first earful walking in the gate, just snowballed from there

Would go as far as to say it was on par with some of the abuse we've had to put up with over in WA for Freo games.

Having been to every state I rank Freo the most feral of all the interstate supporters
