Development and VFL midfield coach, Xavier Clarke's summary of the AFL-listed players from Sunday’s Round 19 VFL win over Coburg.
Anthony Miles28 disposals, nine clearances, seven marks, six tackles.
Continued to show his dominance at VFL level. Worked really hard throughout the midfield and set us up around the ground. Had very good first use through the major impact in the ruck of (Shaun) Hampson and (Ivan) Soldo.
Sam Lloyd23 disposals, eight contested possessions, six marks, one goal two behinds.
Pretty hard for him to back up 48 disposals from the week before, but he was still influential with 23 touches. Hit the scoreboard only once, but spent more time in the midfield. Used the ball really well when he got his hands on it.
Corey Ellis22 disposals, seven tackles, six marks, four rebound-50s.
Has been excellent in the past two games. Played more across half-back, but spent the last quarter through the midfield. His ball use, in and around congestion, is a real feature of his game at the moment. Is starting to work really hard in contests. Finished the match with seven tackles, which underlined his work-rate.
Jayden Short20 disposals, nine contested possessions, four marks, four inside-50s.
Spent a bit more time on the wing, which was pleasing to see. Was strong at the contest, consistently broke through the lines, and capped off his work with quality ball use. Is showing some impressive consistency at the moment. Will be pressing for senior selection in the coming weeks.
Shai Bolton19 disposals, nine tackles, four marks, five inside-50s, one goal one behind.
Was fantastic. Started forward and then was on the wing at times. Really broke the game open with his run-and-carry and his forward pressure was outstanding, leading to several goals for the team. It’s something he’s been very good with over the past few weeks.
Reece Conca18 disposals, four marks, four rebound-50s, three tackles.
Played more game time in his second match back from long-term injury. Started down back and then had a few stints through the midfield. Is starting to build some confidence in his body. With another game under his belt this weekend, I think we’ll start to see him really take the game on.
Ben Lennon17 disposals, ten marks, four inside-50s, three goals two behinds.
Was again dangerous in the forward line. Worked hard, marked strongly and finished with three goals.
Steven Morris15 disposals, six tackles, five inside-50s, one goal.
We love having him in the side. With his pressure, his leadership, the way he attacks the footy and the way he sets up the team, he’s been absolutely sensational for the young players in the forward line and throughout our VFL program.
Ben Griffiths12 disposals, six marks, four inside-50s, two goals one behind.
Really good in his second game back from a shoulder injury. Started to work his way into the contest and is getting good confidence back into his body. Kicked two goals and he’ll benefit from another game under his belt this week.
Callum Moore12 disposals, three rebound-50s, two score assists, one goal.
Continued to play his role well. Ended up on the wing during the last quarter, which was really exciting. Showcased his impressive pace and used the ball efficiently in another encouraging display.
Ivan Soldo21 hitouts, 12 disposals, four marks, four tackles, three score assists, two goals.
Was strong at the centre-square bounces with 21 hit-outs, in his first game back at VFL level for a few weeks. Went forward, kicked two goals and looked dangerous. His spread from contest was a highlight of the game for me.
Todd EltonNine disposals, five marks, three inside-50s.
His aerial contest power is starting to be a key feature of his game for us, whether that’s taking contested marks, or bringing the ball to ground. He’ll continue to be a strong contributor for us.
Shaun Hampson41 hitouts, seven disposals, three marks, four tackles, two clearances.
Although he had only seven disposals in his third game back from long-term injury, he finished with 41 hit-outs out of our team total of 64, which was very impressive. Looked really good at the centre-square bounces. Is getting his leap back and the marking contest component of his game is starting to return as well. And it was pleasing to see him push forward. Could have finished the match with a couple of goals, but ended up with two behinds. With another game under his belt, could be pushing strongly for senior selection.
Ryan GarthwaiteSeven disposals, two tackles.
Continues to have a crack every game. Plays his game well and rarely gets beaten in one-on-one contests. Didn’t get rewarded with a lot of the footy, but what he does off the ball, and through his work-rate, it’s really pleasing to see.
Mabior CholSix disposals, two marks, two rebound-50s.
Looked exciting at times, when he took the game on. Over-ran the footy at one stage, but when he’s confident, backs himself in, and is strong in the contest, that’s what we like seeing from him. Hopefully he can maintain that form.
