Richmond duo Dustin Martin & Trent Cotchin rivalling Geelong's Patrick Dangerfield & Joel Selwood

RICHMOND duo Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin can rival Geelong’s partnership of Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood, according to premiership champion Jonathan Brown.

Long thought of as the league’s best duo, Cats pair Dangerfield and Selwood have received competition this season following the tremendous form of Martin and Cotchin for the Tigers.

That was on display in Richmond’s victory over the Giants on Sunday, where they helped the Tigers overrun a talented midfield group after quarter time to win by 19 points in the wet.

Martin had 31 disposals, 11 clearances and kicked a goal, while Cotchin racked up 27 disposals and seven tackles as Richmond returned to the top four with a defining win.

According to bookmakers, Martin’s performance enhanced his chances in a neck-and-neck race for the Brownlow Medal with Dangerfield, with both the clear favourites for the award.

However, as a partnership, the combination they form with teammates Cotchin and Selwood respectively also make them among the league’s most dynamic duos.

“I’m convinced now — I think the Tigers are capable of winning a final,” Brown told Nova 100.

“Dustin Martin and Trent Cotchin now are as close to Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield as any other team has got in terms of a gun duo. They’re fantastic.”

Richmond’s win saw the Tigers return to the top four and, combined with Geelong’s defeat to Adelaide, saw them move within half a game of the Cats in second spot.

The two sides are set to face off in Round 21 at Simonds Stadium in what could be a defining contest for both of their top four hopes — and their hopes of hosting a home final.

I'd never dare to dream but if we can get past the Suns and the Hawks, that game at Kardinia Park (which ought to be moved) would be the biggest Geelong v Richmond H&A game in history
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Trent Cotchin, Dustin Martin bromance, Will Dustin Martin stay at Richmond?

Herald Sun
26 July 2017

IT IS gaining momentum as the AFL’s biggest bromance, but what are Trent Cotchin and Dustin Martin really like behind closed doors at the Richmond Football Club?

The Tiger duo has been compared to Swiss tennis superstars Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka.

Granted, they are self-comparisons, but they are comparisons nonetheless.

But the big question is, who is the Federer of the pair?

“Dusty and I have some fierce battles on the table tennis table,” Cotchin said.

“We went through a phase where he had the momentum, but it evened right up and he has become really poor.

“If you likened him to Stan Wawrinka at the back of the baseline, a lot of power but when you’re a bit more crafty like myself and Roger Federer, we like to work the angles of the court and use a bit more spin at times.

“I would well and truly have him covered now. He’s become; you could almost call B-Grade level.”

Cotchin provided the insight as part of the Unscriptd video series.

In the video, Cotchin opened up on his first impression of an 18-year-old Martin, who joined the Tigers in 2009.

However, it didn’t take him long to realise appearances can be deceiving.

“My first memory of Dusty, if I’m honest I probably pigeon holed him the same as what the media did,” Cotchin said.

“And when he was drafted at the Tigers, (he) had the tattoo ‘live free, die free’ and (I) just thought we were from different worlds.

“It’s a bit ying and yang in some regards. The Dustin people see on the footy field ... the tattoos, isn’t the one that walks inside our home. He’s got a massive, massive, massive heart. He genuinely cares about people and the way he embraces our kids, my wife is special.”

While Cotchin and Martin have formed a dynamic midfield duo, Cotchin said the pair had learnt plenty of lessons from each other.

“It’s amazing the power of some of the changes I’ve made in my life are on the back of the lessons I’ve learned from someone as raw and unique as Dusty,” Cotchin said.

“It’s pretty special when you reflect on him in that way. I’d like to think that some of the way I live my life and the values I have, have helped him in some way.”
