Supporter base numbers
« on: March 14, 2006, 03:16:32 AM »
The Advertiser also has an article from a couple of weeks ago listing the latest figures from those Roy Morgan surveys on the size of AFL clubs' supporter base - Link

Alot of people take these numbers with a grain of salt (especially so for Sydney and Brisbane) but for the record the Tigers come in at 10th with Geelong and Freo jumping ahead of us in the past 2 years:

End of 2005 supporter base figures

1. Brisbane      - 1,427,000  (-4.86)
2. Sydney       - 1,367,000  (unchanged)
3. Essendon     - 792,000    (-3.88)
4. West Coast  - 775,000    (+8.09)
5. Collingwood   - 722,000    (-7.67)
6. Adelaide       - 618,000    (-7.89)
7. Carlton        - 472,000     (-13.23)
8. Geelong       - 423,000    (+22.54)
9. Fremantle    - 395,000     (-1.74)
10. Richmond    - 378,000   (+1.88)
11. Port Adel.    - 369,000    (+19.81)
12. St Kilda       - 354,000    (+15.31)
13. Hawthorn    - 343,000    (-4.72)
14. Melbourne   - 241,000    (+12.61)
15. W.Bulldogs  - 237,000    (+7.73)
16. North Melb. - 213,000    (-4.05)

Figure in brackets is % gain from 2004 to 2005.

Richmond's gains and losses

2001: 398,000  (8th)
2002: 381,000  (8th)
2003: 401,000  (8th)
2004: 367,000-371,000  (9th)
2005: 378,000  (10th)

Richmond supporters are:

•  30% more likely to live in a young parents household
•  20% more likely to love to do as many sports as possible
•  27% more likely to enter competitions which are on packets or labels on products
•  18% more likely to choose a car mainly on its looks
•  27% more likely to feel comfortable giving their credit card details over the Internet
•  15% more likely to be worried about the health risks of a mobile
•  13% more likely to have played a game of pool/snooker/billiards in the last three months

Can understand people taking the figures with a grain of salt, as they seem a bit flimsy, especially when you don’t know how they are arrived at.

They may provide a ‘ball park’ indication of the supporter base clubs have, but if the figures go up and down, each year, depending on how a club performed the previous season, how is that a reliable indicator of anything?

Who do they survey and where?  Do they survey children who switch allegiances depending on who’s on top of the ladder, because most people don’t change clubs from one life time to the next, let alone one season to the next?

If the figures are solely based on merchandise sales, etc. then the evidence is anything but conclusive, because demand is generally greater for clubs who have success.  Doesn’t mean supporters of under-achieving clubs isn’t there, they just don’t generate the merchandise sales or demand that others do.

If that’s anywhere near right, then when Richmond climbs its way up the ladder, our stocks will soar virtually over night.  That would hardly seem a reliable indicator of what our supporter base actually is now.

They probably just sample a thousand or so people around Australia and then extrapolate to get those numbers. If that's so then one fringe Aussie rules follower changing their mind with who's winning this year could relate to a 10,000 change in the survey figures. As a guide the order of the teams isn't unrealistic but the Sydney and Brisbane numbers you'd particularly take with a grain of salt. Most likely a number of them follow the AFL with a just a passing interest but say they support the Swans or Lions because that's the AFL team where they live. A bit like us in Melbourne saying the Storm is our NRL side. They should limit the survey to those who at least show some genuine allegiance to a club and the game.
