Miller backs F/S draft panel (The Age)

Miller ... backed the suggestion by Lions coach Leigh Matthews that the AFL introduce an independent panel to assess the draft value of a prospective young talent. A club with access to the player under the father-son rule would then have to use the draft pick nominated by the panel in order to secure the player, rather than the third-round draft pick clubs now have to use.

"I have always felt that system has some real merit," Miller said. "I am sure Kevin Sheehan (AFL national talent manager) could very easily tell you where a player would be likely to go, so I don't think it is that hard."

The AFL Commission is understood to also be considering a form of bidding system in which clubs could nominate what pick they would use on recruiting a player and a club with father-son access to the player would then be required to match the round of that draft pick.

I reckon the F/S is there to be exploited, eg Jesse Smith (Kangaroos), but clubs like Adelaide can't go around demanding changes to the rules just to get the hands on a talented youngster. If the AFL bows down to their pressure and lets them take Gibbs i'll be doing this  :banghead  :banghead  :banghead

The Adelaide CEO in the Advertiser was complaining we had had 5 Father-Sons to their none. That would be Richo, David Bourke, Joel Bowden, Nick Jewell and Tommy Roach. He should remember we've been in this comp for 99 years compared to only their 16 and we don't have 4 clubs to pick our F/S from.

Some poster on BF's main board (hardly a reliable source I know) said we got the old 50 game requirement lowered down to 25 for a single year so we could pick up Mark Pitura  ???. I don't remember that and don't have him listed as a F/S selection ???.
