Talented young Richmond key-position player, Jay Schulz, has had his contract with the Club extended until the end of the 2008 season.
It’s a strong show of faith by the Tigers in the 20-year-old, who managed only four senior appearances during the 2005 season, due to injury problems, to take his overall games tally to 25 since making his AFL debut in 2003.
“The match committee has recognised that Jay is going to be an important part of our future,” said Richmond’s Director of Football, Greg Miller.
“Jay’s pre-season has been outstanding and he now looms as a player with the capabilities of playing a key role both forward and back.
“We’re always conscious of ensuring that the contracts of players from interstate, who we want to retain on our list, don’t expire. So, we made the move of offering Jay a new three-year deal – 2006, with an extension into ’07 and ’08.
“The documents were completed at the Club today and will be lodged with the AFL on Monday.”
Schulz’s ability to cope so well with the difficulties he experienced in 2005, was a big plus in the eyes of the Tigers’ brains-trust.
“Jay had quite a bumpy ride last year, with a broken ankle, followed by a well-documented misdemeanor,” Miller said.
“During the season, Terry Wallace made a conscious decision to use ’05 as a body-building program for Jay. He subsequently put on a huge amount of bulk throughout the year and, after a top pre-season now, he’s also added some strong run into his game.
“All this, combined with his excellent kicking, makes him an exciting prospect for us.
“We see him as being an integral part of our side for many years to come.
“It’s a credit to him how he handled the problems he encountered last year, and he’s been rewarded for the maturity he’s displayed with a place in the playing group’s junior leadership group, as well as this contract extension.”
