Are Tiger Fans Too Hard On Troy Simmonds?
Herald-Sun Footy Lifout
Scott Gullan
24th March 2006

No. All that was missing from Simmonds' arrival from Fremantle was Brian Peake's helicopter. No one gets five-year deals any more, yet here was this snake-charmer from the west lobbing at his third club with a big contract and big ambition. With a turning circle of a No. 23 tram, Simmonds couldn't mark the ball for the first half of the year and, on the odd occasion he did, his goalkicking was Richo-like (19 goals from 22 games). Needs to improve quickly to win over the faithful.

Fancing putting pressure on yourself by getting a five year deal.  Well, he signed it and he will be the most watched player i reckon this year.  I hope he can prove me and all the other doubters wrong and have a fantastic year.  But he is a huge worry after seeing him last year.

According to super coach Champion data he was our 8th ranked player last year.

1. Brown
2. Tuck
3. Bowden
4. Coughlin
5. Johnson
6. Richardson
7. Newman
8. Simmonds

and also the 7th. ranked ruckman in the league

Good news for Simmonds is he has sheed some of that bulk that made him so cumbersome. This made him a liability up forweard because the oppostition backs was able to run off very easily. As he started to shrink and spend time in the ruck he improved.

One of the biggest problems he had last year was kicking goals - he missed a lot more than he got. 25 metres out straight in front he's gotta kick 'em.

They say he'll spend more time as first ruck this year - I am not sure that is the right way to go because I reckon as a tap ruckman Knobel is a better beat but Simmonds around the ground is probably better than Knobel. Personally, now thathe has trimmed down and is more agile and mobile I start him at CHF and see how he goes

From seeing him at training and during over preseason we shouldn't see him this year have the turning circle of the QE2. IMO we'll be using in a following role. Allow Knobel and Patto to mainly do the centre bounce taps while Simmo runs around the ground a la Dean Cox, providing a big target on a lead but agile enough to link up with our smalls when we have the ball.

or we can just make him into the team thug.,kind of a cross between Plugger an d Robbie Muir.

Tell him to run at the contest and catapult himself into the opposition players,in an attempt to mark the ball of course..

Simmo has snakes as pets but he's not psycho on a footy field like Robbie Muir was lol. I can't see Simmo running with the ball then for no reason just turning around and thumping a Carlton player who is chasing him :nope.
