Balmey was on SEN this arvo with KB and the Doc:

AUDIO: https://player.whooshkaa.com/episode?id=283913

----------------------------------------------------------------------

* We don't have much cap space left [to bring in anymore high profile players], so it's unlikely you'll be hearing from us aside from trading out a couple of players. We'll keep an eye out as you never know what may transpire and who may become available but it's more than likely we'll be now heading for the draft.

* Balmey said he's old fashioned and doesn't like the public relevations of player contract lengths and dollar amounts. All he said about Lynch's contract is it's a lengthy one and a good one for him.

* We expect the Suns not to match the offer. We talk to the other clubs and it's our view they won't be matching. But they have the right to go through the process thoroughly over the next 3 days.

* We would have liked Conca to stay but we couldn't get anywhere near what he was being offered [by Freo]. We told him we wanted him to stay but that we also understood he needed to look after himself and that he comes from Perth. Balmey said he's a good kid, would always be seen by those at the Club as a Tiger and wished him well.

* Our list manager dept. keeps tabs of all the players around the comp. regarding contracts, who is becoming a free agent and when, etc... It's not hard to find out info (eg: from player managers) especially when it's in a player's interest.

* Dusty had a corky and was always going to play as Balmey said he said before the Prelim. All the stuff about having surgery etc ... was nonsense. Dusty just didn't have a good game. He didn't kick it much because he didn't get too much of the ball.

Tigers footy boss explains why AFL makes free agency system “tough”

By SEN
5 Oct 2018

Richmond footy boss Neil Balme says the public nature of the AFL’s player movement market makes it hard for clubs to remain respectful of the process.

The Tigers officially lodged a deal for Gold Coast restricted free agent Tom Lynch today, with the Suns now having three days to match the deal. It is expected they won’t, and will receive pick three in this year’s draft as compensation.

Lynch’s move to Punt Road was a constant theme throughout the 2018 season, something Balme doesn’t understand.

“It’s a pretty complicated system, it’s made pretty tough,” Balme told SEN’s KB and The Doc.

“When the AFL introduced the system, they make it very public for the whole year, but then no one is really allowed to do anything about it.

“Everyone talks about it but you’re not supposed to do anything.

“It’s been very hard for us to be respectful for the player and the club, but still have a genuine interest.

“We are really pleased he has chosen us. It was obviously a pretty tough time for him.

“We are hopeful that they won’t match it and it will all work.

“We are hopeful it comes through and he plays some good footy for the Tigers, I’m sure he will.”

Balme didn’t confirm the length of the deal, but clarified it is “long-term” one.

What makes either or both of you think Balmey is even hinting at a play for Scully and SPP? I’d be happy to lay a side bet that those 2 won’t end up at Tigerland in the next 2 weeks unless you’re just taking the pee...
“I find it nearly impossible to make those judgments, but he is certainly up there with the really important ones, he is certainly up there with the Francis Bourkes and the Royce Harts and the Kevin Bartlett and the Kevin Sheedys, there is no doubt about that,” Balme said.

Why would he say we weren't expecting much for Ellis and miles?  Pretty stupid. I'm expecting 2 second rounders

Perhaps doing the Suns a temporary favour as far as the Lynch compo is concerned. Claim both of them aren't worth much so the Suns get pick 3 and then, once that is confirmed by the AFL on Monday arvo, we ask for a 2nd rounder for Miles and Ellis at the trade table next week.

Yep. astute point MT.

We wouldn’t wanna give too much away before Lynch is signed sealed and delivered.

Bingo! Anything that helps the Suns to decide to not match our offer and take the compo instead is a good thing. Once Monday is over and Lynch is officially a Tiger [touchwood] then we can focus on our trade period strategy.

Richmond Tigers not expecting much return for Anthony Miles, Corey Ellis

By Mark Koelmeyer
SEN
5 Oct 2018

Richmond general manager of football Neil Balme has confirmed reports that Anthony Miles and Corey Ellis are set to leave the Tigers after failing to break into the senior team on a consistent basis in 2018.

Seeking more playing time, both Ellis and Miles look likey to end up at the Gold Coast whom are set to lose star forward Tom Lynch to Richmond.

Balme, on SEN’s KB and the Doc, stated that both players are seeking a move to secure more playing time at senior level and that Richmond wouldn't expect much back in a trade.

“We have got the situation where blokes like those two in particular have played very good footy this year in our VFL team and haven’t been able to push into the side often enough,” said Balme.

“To be reasonable, we’re saying to them what do you want to do, and they’re saying we really want to play, so we would help them get somewhere if that’s the case, and not expect too much in return.

“There’s interest from the Gold Coast I’m pretty sure in those two.
