Richmond keeps door ajar for Bolton to stay within AFL circlesJune 4, 2019 1:22pm
Fox SportsBrendon Bolton may have lost his position as Carlton’s senior coach.
But he already has another job offer — that is, if he’s keen to return to life as an assistant.
Richmond premiership coach Damien Hardwick has left the door ajar for Bolton to work alongside him at Punt Road Oval, saying he’s a “fantastic coach”.
“I thought the class with which he ended his relationship with Carlton was typical of Bolts,” Hardwick told Talking Footy.
“I know, from my own point of view, he walks into my club any day of the week.
“He’s a fantastic coach, fantastic character and I think he’ll find himself within the AFL circles pretty quickly.”
Bolton was shown the door after Carlton slumped to its tenth loss of the season on Sunday, almost four years after he was appointed as the club’s coach.
With an overall winning percentage of just 20.8 per cent, Hardwick acknowledged Bolton’s position had become untenable.
But Hardwick didn’t think Bolton’s predicament was comparable to the situation he found himself in in 2016 when he was under immense pressure to keep his job.
“It is an outcome based industry. We understand that,” Hardwick said.
“And probably in fairness my position was a little bit different to bolts. We’d made finals the previous three years. We had probably some runs on the board. We sort of knew we weren’t as bad as 2016, the season it was.”
Richmond has matches against Geelong and Adelaide before its much needed bye, with the likes of Jack Riewoldt (PCL), Jayden Short (elbow), Toby Nankervis (adductor), Kane Lambert (Achilles) and Jack Ross (ankle) all expected to return in the second half of the season.
Hardwick said there was also a “small chance” five-time All-Australian defender Alex Rance (ACL) could feature later in the year.
“I saw him running today and he’s just such an impressive human,” he said.
“He’s running and doing some agility type movements. I’m astounded at how well he heals.
“He’s still got a little bit of swelling in that knee. But in fairness we’ll give him the chance he deserves.”
