"I haven't coveted it": Richmond chief not craving AFL role

By Andrew Slevison

Brendon Gale has no immediate ambitions to leave his current role as Richmond CEO for a job with the AFL.

Gale’s name has been bandied around as a possible replacement for Gillon McLachlan once his time as AFL chief comes to an end.

But the former Tigers player and current chief administrator insists he is solely focused on what is happening in his own backyard as the club sets its sights on a third premiership in four years.

“I haven’t coveted it,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“When people think highly of you and consider you for a role like that, it’s flattering.

“But honestly, I’ve been in this caper long enough to be disciplined enough to stay in the moment. You’ve just got to stay in the moment, you’ve got to do the best job you can.

“If that opportunity arose in the future, and it was something I felt passionately and strongly about, then I’d consider it.

“I’ve been given no indication that’s the case. Right now my focus is absolutely on the Richmond Football Club and I jump out of bed every day absolutely motivated.”

Gale also touched on the subject of succession planning within Richmond.

“You always think about it, not just in terns of my position, but in terms of the talent available more broadly through the whole club,” he added.

“You think about where you are, the future, the talent, people that have leadership attributes, how you continue to encourage and develop them on the pathway.

“That includes my position. I’m always conscious of when I do leave, giving the board options to consider internally.”

More from Gale's interview yesterday:

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale believes Tigers coach Damien Hardwick hasn’t received sufficient recognition externally for the major role he’s played in the Club winning two premierships throughout the past three seasons.

“I don’t think Damien probably gets enough credit,” Gale said on SEN.

“He had the ability to, under incredible pressure – and we know what pressure does to people in this industry – to pause, to honestly reflect, to renew, and to transform the way we played.

“In probably three months, from ’16 (2016) to ’17 (2017), we changed the way we played football and won a premiership inside 12 (months) and another one two years later...

“I just think he’s been an extraordinary coach for the Richmond Football Club.”
