“It’s a good concern to have”: Leppitsch excited by “scary” Richmond depth

Richmond assistant coach Justin Leppitsch admits the strength of depth of the club’s list will provide the coaching staff with plenty of wanted headaches this year.

The reigning premiers head into the 2020 season with a host of promising younger (and older) players ready to experience more senior footy alongside the established stars and the vital role players.

Garry Lyon suggests the playing list of the Tigers bats even deeper this year given the presence and development of the likes of Marlion Pickett, Sydney Stack, Jack Ross, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Noah Balta, among others.

“Your depth is scary,” Lyon said to Leppitsch on SEN Breakfast.

“When we think about the Tigers now, it’s a scary thing to see. Young players that haven’t had a crack yet and older players who have only just sort of introduced themselves to AFL footy, and where the upside is.”

Leppitsch agrees, speaking highly of the strength of the playing list as the Tigers strive to defend their 2019 flag.

“It’s a good concern to have,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“How to fit Pickett, Stack, Ross and even young Riley Collier-Dawkins, who hasn’t played a game yet. Noah Balta, how do we put him consistently into the team?

“There’s a few of those guys who we feel are ready to play AFL footy that may miss out early (in the season).”

Six star Tigers - Dustin Martin, Trent Cotchin, Jack Riewoldt, Shane Edwards, Tom Lynch and Bachar Houli - will be in action in the State of Origin Bushfire Relief game on Friday night which opens up plenty of opportunities for their first Marsh Series fixture against Collingwood on Sunday.

“It’s probably a good thing there’s six guys missing out (by playing) Friday night so we can play the kids on Sunday,” Leppitsch added.

“Let’s hope it all works out in the end for them.”

Play the kids early, see how they go and rest the aged
