AFL star in steroids probe
Liam Houlihan From: Sunday Herald Sun October 10, 2009 4:30PM

EX-WEST Coast Eagle Daniel Chick has been apprehended at Perth airport over steroids.

His Subiaco coach Scott Watters said he had spoken to Chick's fiancee and Chick was upset at the attention.

A Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman said a 33-year-old Perth man was "being investigated ... for attempting to import performance and image enhancing drugs through Perth Airport".

Customs said the man was stopped for questioning after arriving back in Australia and his baggage was subsequently searched.

Sources said the man had been the subject of a long-running surveillance exercise.

Friends of the man said today he sometimes used steroids for legitimate uses relating to asthma and chest infections.

"My understanding is it is a prescription drug for his asthma...he didn't have a prescription on him and it's in tablet form," Mr Watters said.

WA Police and the AFP were not involved, spokespeople said.

The maximum penalty for the attempt offence if charged and convicted is five years imprisonment or a $110,000 fine.

No charges have been laid but the investigation continues.
