FOX SPORTSThe AFL has revealed designs for a comprehensive upgrade to the Marvel Stadium and Docklands precinct that it believes will make it “one of the best sports and entertainment destinations in the world”.
Part of the Victorian Government’s $225 million partnership with the AFL, which includes hosting the grand final until at least 2058, construction will begin in 2021 and will include a town square style space that can be used all year.
Designs for the upgraded facility, which will also feature upgrades to team facilities at the venue, were released on Friday.
The upgraded precinct will include revitalised entry points, newly created function rooms, major renovations to public food and beverage areas and two new, enlarged scoreboards in the arena.
New lighting and technology upgrades are also expected, in an effort to bring the stadium closer to Perth’s recently upgraded Optus Stadium.
The town square is expected to be the last part of the redevelopment and is likely to be completed in 2023, with a town planning permit application being lodged with the City of Melbourne.
