Suns circle athletic Tiger to fill half-back void

GOLD Coast is eyeing athletic Richmond defender Oleg Markov to fill a void at half-back.

The out-of-contract Tiger is understood to be considering an approach from the Suns where he would join former Richmond teammate Brandon Ellis.

Markov, 24, played the last of his six games this season in round 17, but has been squeezed out of the Tigers' side and named emergency over the past fortnight.

The son of former world champion pole vaulter Dimitri Markov, Oleg has played 23 games for the Tigers since he was drafted at pick No.50 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

A move to Gold Coast would also provide Markov greater opportunity after being stuck behind the likes of Bachar Houli, Liam Baker, Jayden Short and Nathan Broad in recent years.

Gold Coast has also shown interest in dual premiership defender Broad, however that is understood to have cooled.

Markov is one of several Tigers without a deal heading into next season, including Houli, who has been approached by Essendon with the prospect of greater career security.

Others include fellow defenders Derek Eggmolesse-Smith and Ryan Garthwaite, plus Riley Collier-Dawkins, Jake Aarts, Toby Nankervis and Marlion Pickett.

Just 23 games in 5 years averaging 13 disposals per game. He's only been a fringe player for us so it wouldn't be a surprise to see him go.

Gold Coast have picks 5, 24, 35, 72, 78, ... . So we'll probably get thrown a nothing pick like 72 for Oleg.

Main snout at BF reckons we're into Jeremy Sharp & Josh Ballard clone Will Brodie....should be after 2MP...rather just get a pick even if it's only for points to match bids on MJ than either of the other two... :shh

I’d hate to see Markov traded away, I see him as a Houli replacement

IMO, humble as it is, we should keep and let Houli slide.

Markov has speed and a great mo, translates to character and individuality, he is the future, Houlu is the past, I think we are trying for a flag and depleting up and comers.

We have put the hard yards into Markov, just play him, he had a massive upside and it will send a great message to the group, similar situation to Ross

He looks like Leo Wanker, therefore I struggle to take him seriously

It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Markov looked the goods this year.

Should find a way to get him in the team. Wonder if he could do a wing
