RICHMOND

Metric: Scoring from defensive 50

2020: 12.8 (#5)

2021: 10.8 (#17)

There are two things at work here. The first is how the Tigers have slightly dropped off; the second is how the rest of the AFL has stepped up. Whether it’s due to the man-on-the-mark rule change, or just tactical changes by coaches, teams are finding it easier to go all way from defence to a score. Port Adelaide, as mentioned above, has been doing this much more in 2021. Richmond though has lost a couple of points a week - that doesn’t sound like much, but it’s 15 per cent of their scoring from this source. Is it a personnel issue, given their injuries, or on purpose? Perhaps both.
