Royce Hart as 19th Man
« on: October 01, 2021, 10:59:35 AM »
I was at the MCG on a wet day when Royce Hart came on as 19th/20th Man to help win the game.  He was placed near full forward.  It was not the 1973 Preliminary Final (although this was the best known case).  I'd like to know which game this was.  Can anyone remember it?  Here's the criteria: (1) it was wet, (2) Tiges wore white shorts (so I'm guessing it was a final. The white shorts were a huge contrast to the muddy shorts of the other players), (3) Hart was not fully fit (hence the 19th man role, so it must have been near the end of his career).

Maybe the 1975 semi-final v Carlton? That was wet, and Royce only had a couple of kicks, so might have come on at half time. Didn't kick a goal, so couldn't really say he helped win the game.

The 1975 Semi Final was definitely a wet day but Royce didn't kick a goal as FFV says

A crowd of 76,967, on a wet September Saturday afternoon, saw an inaccurate Tigers team emerge victorious by nine points – 9.17 (71) to 9.8 (62).

Hart did come off the bench during the 1975 Prelim and kicked a goal but it was out at Waverley and we didn't win.

North turned the tables in the 1975 finals series. Once again, injury problems forced Hart to the bench in the preliminary final and he was brought on with his team behind in the third term. Hart immediately goaled, but this time the effort was in vain and Richmond lost.
