THE “PERFECT FIT” FOR RICHMOND AND THE “DELICATE PROCESS” THE TIGERS WILL GO THROUGH

Departing Adelaide Crows veteran Daniel Talia would be the “perfect fit” for Richmond, says Jordan Lewis.

The 29-year-old defender has not been offered a contract by the Crows for 2022 and beyond, so is now on the lookout for a new club.

The likes of Essendon, Geelong, St Kilda and even the Western Bulldogs have reason to be interested in Talia, given their respective needs for an experienced backman.

However, Lewis feels the Tigers could provide the perfect home for Talia in the the wake of three-time premiership defender David Astbury’s retirement.

“From a Daniel Talia point of view, with the Astbury retirement, it seems to be a perfect fit if they wanted to get someone in to strengthen their backline,” he said on SEN Breakfast.

“To be a ready-made player and a lot of experience to give them another shot at the flag next year.

“For me, the Richmond Football Club seems likely. I know they get (Noah) Balta back and they might structure up there.”

Astbury aside, there are some other 30-plus Tigers who are nearing the end of their playing days at Punt Road.

Bachar Houli, 33, announced his retirement on Thursday, while Trent Cotchin (31), Jack Riewoldt and Shane Edwards (both 32) are all contracted until the end of 2022.

Having won four flags with Hawthorn and witnessing what occurred after their successful era, Lewis knows all too well what is required to breathe new life into a dynasty team that begins to fall apart.

“If I’m getting drafted by Richmond over the next two to three years, I would still want to feel a bit of that success that has gone before me,” he added.

“That effectively lies either in the coach or the players that are still there. You’ve got to feel what it was like to be successful, you’ve got to walk around the change rooms and see Jack Riewoldt or Trent Cotchin.

“You’ve got to understand the history, and that’s the perfect point right there and then. It’s a delicate process they’ll go through next year.”
