8. DAMIEN HARDWICK (Richmond)

Hardwick admitted recently 2021 wasn’t “the greatest of years from a coaching perspective” from him and he felt “tired”, but is now reinvigorated heading into 2022. The Tigers were due for a fall and, in retrospect, not even making the finals last year could be good for them given the extra time they had off for the first time in a long time. Some key departures due to retirement and trade have changed the line-up, but it’s hard to shake the feeling there’s at least one more genuine crack at a flag with this current group of players. A change in captaincy has also added to the ‘new-look’ Tigers. Hardwick’s current contract expires at the end of 2024 and that seems like a fitting point to consider whether he is the man to try and lead the club for the next few years after that, or call it a day after a remarkable stint at the helm. Missing the finals outright once again will turn up the pressure gauge on Hardwick, but it’s hard to see them not bouncing back from 2021. If they don’t, does Hardwick really want to be the one to try and rebuild them again after 12 years in the role?
