5 December 2017THEY might not be from Tigerland but that’s not stopping the national Dutch cricket team taking their song.
The Netherlands team won their match against Namibia and celebrated with their team song — the Richmond Football Club’s song — with a few change ups.
Coach Ryan Campbell posted the team singing after the match on Monday with the lyrics slightly changed to fit the gentleman’s game.
The 14-man squad is hoping to win another two matches at the ICC World Cricket League Championship in Dubai to become the 13th One Day International Team.
But first, they’ve got to get through two matches on Wednesday and Friday.
Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Hong Kong, Kenya, Nepal and the United Arab Emirates are also playing in the international competition.
The Netherlands are on top of the scoreboard.
Campbell, originally from Perth, said if the team, aged 19 to 33, became the 13th team it could change cricket forever in The Netherlands.
“The Dutch have a proud history in cricket, particularly in World Cups but to be pitted against the best 12 teams in World Cricket for a two-year period would make us way more professional and give our players the opportunity to become full-time cricketers,” he said.
Despite sporting just two other Aussies, Scott Williams — who plays A-grade cricket for Richmond — and the team analyst, the full squad happily sing the song.
“There is no better feeling than spending a day with your mates giving all you have to win a game and then share the joy in the rooms after play,” the Fremantle Dockers supporter said.
“It’s still a working progress and as all of our lads speak Dutch, they are looking to substitute some of the English lines into Dutch.”
Campbell decided to implement the song after spending his life in sporting teams.
And as for the choice of song, the Dockers song was too hard to create a Dutch tune.
“I believe the Richmond song is so iconic and we found the words we wanted to use matched it brilliantly,” Campbell said.
“It also helped that they won the Grand Final and we all watched it whilst on a tour to South Africa recently.”
Campbell said the team is on the cusp of something special and hopes to share the same winning fate.
