A historic Melbourne beer brand makes a comeback3AW
14 April 2022 A historic Melbourne beer brand has returned.
Richmond Lager has been revived by Carlton United Breweries (CUB).
Founder and publisher of Brews News, Matt Kirkegaard, says it’s “a very historic brand”, and it’s “nostalgic” for many.
The Richmond Brewery, which originally made the beer, closed in 1962.
“If you think back 100 or more years pretty much every suburb or every region had its own brand,” Mr Kirkegaard told Jimmy Bartel and Shane McInnes, filling in for Ross and Russel.
“Over time some of those brands weren’t needed anymore so they kind of faded out in favour of things like VB, which became such a juggernaut, but we’re starting to see some of them coming back a little bit.”
CUB has also revived two other brands — Reschs Dinner Ale in NSW and Cairns Draught in Queensland.
