Club Corner - July 24
« on: July 24, 2006, 11:33:17 PM »
Paul Gough - afl site and keen Tiger supporter

* Game and % out of the Eight. Rollercoaster ride since Freo loss. Looked like we were gone then the Pies and Port wins put us back into it. Disappointing last 2 weeks with only kicking 7 goals. Now need to win 5 of last six - tough assignment.

* Bris, Carl, Ess look very winnable. Need to win 2 of the 3 hard ones. At least every game from now on is in Melbourne.

* Excellent progress this year comapred to last since we've done it with a far younger team (Polo, Raines, etc not the Chaffeys) which is a good sign for the future even if we finish similarly to last year. Alot better when you compare where we've come from (2004).

..... taking calls ....

Caller one: what do you think of Wallace's comments about Richo being better than the 23rd player?

Goughy:  Can't play the young kids for nothing. They have to earn their spot. We've played youth this year anyway.

Same caller: Should we tank our last 3 games if we lose say next 3 games?

Goughy: No need to tank given the strong draft. Would hate to see us lose to improve our draft position although won't need to worry about that this draft. Rain in the next two weeks would be a bonus. We're a 5 goal better side in the wet [Ed. Explain Sat night Goughy ;) ]

Caller 2 (Rod from Dromana): Stuck up for Richo.

Goughy: Richo will be right when the easier games come along. You always get maximum effort from Richo and he'll be right when he gets his handling right.

Rod:  Mentioned Clash guernseys.....

Goughy: People worrying about clash guernseys are wasting their energy. Most clubs wore alternative guernseys in the heritage round. No big deal.

Caller 3: How did Paddy do without his brother?

Goughy: Better as a running attacking defender than a stopper. Had a very good year although struggled on the weekend.

Caller 4: About time to put Lids on the ball?

Goughy: Agreed. Second year blues maybe. Struggles kicking for goal despite being a good field kick. Sprays them a bit.

Same caller: Bring in Cam Howat... need more midfielders.

Goughy: We're missing Cogs.

Caller 5: Said we are doing alright playing the young guys. 10 guys under 30 games against Melbourne. We're trying them out and it'll pay off in future years. Best list in the past 25 years. 8 wins above expectations at the start of the year.

Goughy: Agreed. When they physically develop also we'll be on the way up.

Caller 6 (Billy): Aker at Richmond?

Goughy: Aker still has the pace and can win matches and kick goals. But at 30 not for Richmond. Prefer to build a club up together from youth. Premiership teams have shown that's the way to go.

Billy: Trade Chaffey/Rodan for Aker   [Ed.  :rollin   :stupid]

Goughy: Ah no Billy. Don't think Brisbane will accept that. Not the year to give away draft picks.

Billy: We won't make the Eight .......   [Ed.   :wallywink]

Caller 7: Missing Cogs ... our cog [excuse the pun] in the midfield. Cost us a spot in the Eight. We can't get it out of the middle.

Goughy: Agreed. Our best crunch player too.

Same caller: Playing home games at the Dome.....  Collingwood 12 MCG games to only our 9.

Goughy: There needs to be games at the Dome. Hopefully we can get a 9-2 split. Collingwood has brought the crowds. Our poor form in previous years has cost us. Freo and Port games can cost you money as it's a 100,000 seat stadium. Better to play them at the Dome.

* Tribunal: Take away 25% early plea for obvious things done wrong. Why get rewarded for pleading guilty to something obvious (Brad Green tonight - 3 weeks down to 1).

Player list summary

* Joel - Excellent year minus Melb game.

* Paddy - relevation. Just needs to get tighter.

* Browny - wait till next year.

* Casserley - one to watch next year

* Chaffey - crossroads

* Cogs - terrific up until doing his knee

* Lids - Marked harder by taggers. Second year blues but he'll be right

* Foley - like to see him use the ball better but likes him alot as he wins the hard ball.

* Gas - rule changes haven't helped him as game is quicker but still a good negater.

* Hall - a fan but he's been missing though injury

* Hartigan - hard at it but back in the VFL before injured.

* Hughes - liked the look of him early on this year but form in VFL not the best but it's his first year.

* Hyde - great story. Made the most of his career. May finish high up in the B&F.

* Jackson - big year for him next year as he'll be in his 4th year.

* Johnson - like to see him us the ball better but still a wonderful player and our best choice as captain.

* Kellaway - fantastic player. Wish he could play on forever. Fan of both Kellaways. Andy may end up with a better record than Duncan.

* Knobel - in chaffey mould. At the crossroads with Simmo's form.

* Krak - star at the MCG and/or the wet. Average elsewhere especially at the Dome. Inconsistent.

* Limbach, McGuane - next year. Haven't seen both.

* Meyer - in and out this year. Next year a big year for him - 3rd year.

* Moore - alot to offer but injury prone. Needs a bit of luck and a run of games.

* Newman - tragedy. Not as bad a break as Browny's so hopefully back sooner.

* JON - excellent player of the future when he bulks up.

* Patto - looks a bit slow but pace can come along with the bigger guys. Next year.

* Pettifer - number 1 whipping boy but has turned it around. Backed up his year. A bit quiet in past 2 weeks so we need him this week.

*  Polo - terrific. Even better when he bulks up more. Rising star nominee.

* Rainesy - awesome. Rising star favourite in his opinion.

* Richo - Still a wonderful player.

* Roach - other youngsters gone ahead of him. Next year a big year for him.

* Rodan - at the crossroads.

* Schulz - starting to warm to Sarge. Richo's natural successor up forward. Good first half player but fades. Hopefully with more experience he can become more consistent.

* Simmo - Eating humble pie on Simmo and his 5 year contract. B&F then daylight. Rough Brownlow chance. Wallace found his position at ruck. Wasted as a forward all his career. Lade his only danger as AA ruck. Deserves a AA bench spot at least.

* Staff - victim of Simmo's success.

* Tambling - Slightly behind where we expected him to be. No 4 pick puts pressure on him. If he was a late pick  like Rainesy no one would care at this stage. Still thinks he'll be good for us.

* Thursfield - just hopes he comes back right. Terrific young kids and a find down back.

* Tivs - much improved year but off the boil the last couple of weeks. Beautiful kicking action so you don't expect him to turn it over as he does. No right foot.

* Tuck - off the boil in recent weeks like a number of our players in the second half of the year. That's what has cost us the past 2 weeks. Too many players down on form.

* White - a future although made mistakes on Saturday night.

Last final comments about the club from Goughy:

* Off-field doing well. Not out of the woods financially but a far better run club now under March and co.

* Style of play: Been good at shutting teams down. Modern footy seems to have lower scores with teams getting numbers behind the ball.
