NEIL BALME BULLISH ON TIGERS' FLAG HOPESBy Vas Shipp
SEN
23 August 2022The Tigers are one of the competition's form sides as we enter the finals series and senior club advisor Neil Balme believes his team is a “genuine chance” at winning a historic fourth grand final in six seasons.
Speaking to Garry Lyon and Tim Watson on SEN Breakfast, the long-time footy coach, player and administrator said that while inconsistencies and injuries have plagued Damien Hardwick’s squad, there isn’t any reason why they can't run the table in September.
“There’s no doubt our best is very good, and our best is good enough to compete with all of them,” he said.
“We just haven’t quite played at our best often enough this year.”
Richmond is riding a four-game winning streak into the finals and will travel up north to take on the faltering Brisbane Lions on a Thursday night to kick off the knockout tournament in a matchup Balme referred to as a genuine “50/50 game”.
“We’ve given back virtually five games in lots of ways,” said Balme, referring to the side’s draw against the Dockers and losses to the Kangaroos, Suns, Cats and Swans, all by six points or less.
Despite needing to win four consecutive games to claim the cup, Balme is optimistic as to the team’s chances.
“The attitude and intent has been terrific the whole time. The boys are genuinely enjoying training and doing all the stuff they’re doing so, we’re a genuine chance,” he said.
Balme also indicated his support for Adam Kingsley, who was appointed the new Giants head coach on Monday, to remain on as an assistant throughout the Tigers finals campaign.
The team confirmed as much with a statement released on Tuesday afternoon, thanking Kingsley for his service to the club and indicating that he would remain with the playing group until the conclusion of the season.
