How did you rate our H&A season performance?

Bucks has us on par.

BUCKLEY’S EXPECTATION METER FOR RICHMOND

SEN
25 August 2022

(13-8-1, 7th) - Met expectations

“For a lot of people it may be overs, but I thought they met. I had them as a lock (for finals).

“I thought they could win as many as 16 and I had them for as little as 11, and they got 13.5. They’ve just rewired.

“No Dylan Grimes is a big question mark going forward.

“But their forward line in the 2020 Grand Final was Castagna, Lambert, Martin, D.Rioli, Edwards, Riewoldt and Lynch. Now they’ve got Noah Cumberland in there, they’ve got Tyler Sonsie who is going in there, Shai Bolton who is probably replacing Dustin Martin as the match-winner, and they’ve got Maurice Rioli instead of half-back Dan Rioli who has played an amazing season.

“So we’ve had constant change and requiring, but they’ve kicked 200 goals from turnover this year. The last time that was done was them in 2018. They’re the number one offence in the competition.”

It has been a tough year. Top players getting injured regularly through out the year meant we could not get a settled side. Also meant that our performance fluctuated within games and as a result we lose some close ones.

On the flip side to that the absence of the top players enabled the kids to gain experience and this was amplified by the losing the close games.

Make no mistake this has been a good year for us with an eye to the future. At the beginning of the season there were many questions over the most of the kids. However as the year progress the doubting questions became positive thoughts on how far can these kids reach? Gibcus, Sonsie, MJR, Miller, Cumberland, Ross, Ralphsmith and Clarke can all play. Bolton, Baker, D Rioli went to new levels. The future is much more positive now than in March earlier this year.

And we have made finals again.

7th is lower than we thought but we are still there. And we are looking at possibly a hard mountain to climb. Brisbane away, followed by Sydney away, then prelim v Geelong, then GF Melbourne. Imagine winning from 7th with that win. Imagine the bragging rights  ;D

For my expectations at the start of the year we probably are on par.

Upon reflection of how I felt week to week I think below par. In the second half of the season I expected more wins and we dropped some absolute Monty's blowing our chances of top 4.

I suppose we met expectations for me. Thought with players aging and the lack of games into younger players, that is we had and still have a big gap in games played between the seniors and say 22 and unders. Yep that was eased a bit out of neccesity  but with that i thought  we would finish anywhere from bottom half of the 8  to 12th.

I thought we would scrape the 8 and I was just hoping our kids get finals exposure. I’m that sense I guess the team did meet those preseason expectations. But then given how well our team has looked when firing somehow I got disappointed we didn’t finish top 4 With all the close losses?

I always thought we'd make the 8

Thought we'd finish between 4-6

So while relieved we made finals, can't help but feel we blew a huge opportunity to finish top 4.

Still think we can give it a good shake

But we must be switched on from the first bounce on Thursday night

Will depend on how we go in finals.

If we get bounced week 1 then all of those close losses we threw away will stick out as a wasted season.

If we go deep then the H&A season will mean jack.

It’s been a ridiculous season in so many ways . Past 4 months our worse result has been a 6 point loss .

How many games have we been in front during the final quarter - to finish with only 13 wins is disappointing.

The rewiring as Nathan Buckley likes to call it has been brilliant . The injection of youth has saved our season from the abyss. Cumberland and Rioli Jr have been revelations .

Now we look scary- peaked at the right time . I think we can cause havoc now .

Considering the strategy of rebuilding on the run is in full flight and weve brought in Gibcus, Clarke, Sonsie, Cumberland and given more games to Rioli, Ralphsmith, Miller etc the season for me has been above expectation. Blooded kids, got more to come next season and we are 4 wins away from a flag I think its been a terrific year for the team going forward.
