-------------------------------------------------

An injury-hit Richmond were edged out by Carlton in a brutal round one clash at the MCG on Thursday night.

Richmond led at every change, but with just two players on the bench after half-time, the Blues overran the Tigers in the final term with the 12.14 (86) to 12.9 (81) victory.

Compounding the loss for Richmond was a suspected torn right ACL suffered by rising Richmond defender Josh Gibcus in the second term, the young Tiger landing from an attempted spoil with a relatively straight leg and needing to be stretchered off the field.

Charlie Curnow was moved into defence in the final, tense minutes and made a few crucial intercepts against the tiring Richmond forwards after youngster Seth Campbell closed the gap to four, while some strong stoppage work locked the ball up inside the Tigers' 50 in the dying seconds.

The Tigers finished with two fit players on the bench, while Tom Lynch, Dustin Martin and Toby Nankervis were coming off injuries and playing their first games for the year.

Carlton started full of fire and verve, carving Richmond apart with pace down the field and moving the ball with sharp hands.

But Lynch made an instant impact on return, drawing two free kicks in the first term for two goals, while Martin made an impact in his first quarter for the year, as the Tigers took a surprise 11-point lead into the first break.

Both sides were able to score with relative ease, but Carlton upped the ante in the second term, dominating play and time in forward half. A failure to capitalise on the scoreboard kept the door ajar for Richmond, Maurice Rioli jnr snatching back the lead with a goal on the half-time siren.

A concussed Tylar Young added to Richmond's defensive woes in the third term, with winger Kamdyn McIntosh and defender-turned forward-returned defender Noah Balta moved into the backline.

Once again, the Blues were unable to fully put the foot on the accelerator despite the quality advantage and weight of numbers in attack, struggling with their entries into forward 50 while Nick Vlastuin intercepted at will.

Vlastuin was simply superb throughout, landing a crucial tackle in the goal-square on Charlie Curnow, which after an extensive score review, was determined to be a holding-the-ball decision, rather than a goal.

Tom De Koning – who had missed several shots earlier in the night – brought the bellowing 83,000-strong crowd to their feet with a sailing set shot from outside 50, taking back the lead at the start of the final term, capitalising on a sloppy 50m penalty conceded by vice-captain Liam Baker.

Mitch McGovern was a rock at centre-half back, producing some of his best footy, particularly in the opening half, while Patrick Cripps (31 disposals) and George Hewett (six clearances) drove the way through the midfield.

Midfielder Dion Prestia was subbed out of the game at quarter-time with a hamstring injury, having come off a five-day break last week.

Curnow finished the game with some painful-looking stitches in his cheek after an accidental boot stud to the face, while Lewis Young received some treatment on a lower leg injury but played out the match.

GRADING EVERY PLAYER IN CARLTON'S ROUND 1 WIN OVER RICHMOND

By Nic Negrepontis

Richmond

Nick Vlastuin - A+

Carlton couldn't contain him. Vlastuin did as he liked across half back and intercepted well all night.

Noah Balta - A

Did a bit of everything. Starred up forward, went down back and played on Curnow in the second half, did some ruck work, gave away some free kicks. The absolute full package.

Jacob Hopper - A

Looked back to his best as a ball winning, midfield bull. His best game in quite some time.

Toby Nankervis - B+

Took Tom De Koning's space at centre bounces and used his strength around the ground. Was a big part of Richmond winning the contested possessions.

Dylan Grimes - B

Battled well on Curnow all night. Can absolutely hold his head high.

Tom Lynch - B

Got through. Had to play more minutes than they would have liked. Looked good early when he would have been fresh.

Kamdyn McIntosh - B

Taught young Ollie Hollands a few lessons at stages, using his experience. Did his job.

Jayden Short - B

Didn't have a whole heap of the ball, but was effective whenever he went near it. Kicked a big goal from outside 50.

Dustin Martin - B-

Made things happen whenever he went near it. Might need a few games to find his match fitness.

Tim Taranto - B-

Was industrious but fumbly at times. Kicked a crucial goal in the third quarter.

Marlion Pickett - C+

Played well, kept his positioning on the wing. Did some ruck work after the injuries.

Daniel Rioli - C+

Wasn't his usual dynamic self. Had some nice moments but was kept fairly quiet.

Jack Ross - C+

Got more minutes around the ball and did a decent job. Nothing special but didn't do much wrong.

Nathan Broad - C+

Some big defensive wins in the fourth quarter.

Liam Baker - C+

Bobbed up in the second half when his side needed a spark. Kicked a handy goal but also wasted a couple of chances and gave away a costly 50 in the final term.

Seth Campbell - C+

A solid second performance as a small forward. Worked hard and got his reward with a fourth-quarter goal.

Shai Bolton - C

Wasted a few opportunities. Looked dangerous around the footy, but could have had a much bigger night. Fumbled a key ball in the dying seconds.

Rhyan Mansell - C

Had some good moments after coming on as the sub. Unfortunately will be remembered for hitting the post from close range. The goal would've given the Tigers a game-high lead in the third term.

Maurice Rioli - D+

A lot of hard running, but still struggles to find the footy, which he needs to be able to do at this level.

Tylar Young - N/A

Subbed out with a concussion in the third quarter.

Dion Prestia - N/A

Suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter and subbed out.

Josh Gibcus - N/A

Suffered a serious knee injury in the second quarter.
