Prestia has always been injury prone going all the way back to 2015 with the suns. Difference between now and when he first came over is that we were so good we could make do without him and prioritise getting his body right for finals. I’d say he’s been unfortunately limping for the majority of his career, not just the end of it.
2017 - 3 games missed
2018 - 11 games missed
2019 - 0 games missed
2020 - 12 games missed

2023 - 2 games missed
2024 - 9 games missed

While I understand that point, I think the the heights are so much more memorable than the depths.
Wayne Carey was an extraordinarily good footballer, so too Plugger. I used to just go to the footy to watch them play. Flew up to Sydney to watch plugger kick his 100th,  Duck having 28 and kicking 6 against Port in finals in 1999 are far more vivid memories than a crappy last year or two
"The money might have been better. But, at the end of the day, Richmond showed faith in me. It's only fair that now we're 18th on the ladder, I show the faith back in the club and do everything I can to put them in front. In the end, I'm stoked I made the decision to stay. I f***ing love this club”

Triple premiership midfielder Dion Prestia was the first player out on the track on Thursday and is building towards a return next week, with Yze set to bring the 32-year-old back through the VFL for the first time in his career.

"I think that will probably be the plan," he said.

"He will hate me saying that, but we've got to be very cautious with what happened last year; I don't think he played any VFL games last year and we got the result we got. If it means he needs half a game at VFL level then we will do that.

"We need a fit Dion at AFL level. He is such an important player and leader for us. When he comes back we want him back for the rest of the season, not in and out."

Prestia to return in VFL as young Tigers prepare for big stage

By AAP
22 May 2025

RICHMOND is hoping a conservative approach through the VFL will help premiership midfielder Dion Prestia finally overcome his tortured run with injuries.

Instead of returning in the Tigers' Dreamtime clash with Essendon at the MCG on Friday night, Prestia will make his comeback in Frankston when he plays two quarters against the Bombers' VFL side.

After being restricted to 13 games last year, the 32-year-old is yet to play a game this season following an Achilles injury.

But Tigers coach Adem Yze believes the club has learnt valuable lessons on how to manage their star veteran.

"There always is, with the talent he's got and the leadership he provides," Yze said of the temptation to bring Prestia straight back into the AFL.

"Last year, you could see how important he was when he came in and we probably did it the wrong way and he missed six weeks. We've got to learn from that.

"If he gets through, he'll be available the week after.

"We're playing the long game with him.

"I'm not sure the last time he's played VFL, but he's bought into that."
