Club Corner - July 17

Paul Armstrong

* We will be going to the tribunal. Hoping to downgrade Joel's charge - reckless down to negligent - which would get him below 100 points. Don't know if it's a good week to be going after last week's uproar but we'll find out tomorrow night.

* No excuses on Friday night as conditions were perfect. We got Melbourne below their best but we played nowhere near our best. Maybe the back to back 6 day breaks had some effect. Final score flattered us.

* Lids completed the whole skills session today so he's right to play.

* Coburg players who put their hands up for selection - Rodan (3 goals), Staff (best game for month), Meyer and JON played well.

* 7 guys below 30 games on friday - we're a young side and so as long as their is upward improvement on the graph then so bet it where we finish on the ladder.

* Only played the Swans 9 weeks ago but we were thin on the ground when we got belted by 20 goals. Hopefully we'll be more competitive than last time. We've got a 8 day break compared to their six.

* Coburg plays Sandy at Trevor Barker Oval, Sandy on Sunday. Third on the ladder so it'll be good for our youngsters to play in finals.

Dean Polo

* We were number 1 in effective kicks the month before the Melbourne game. Well down on that on Friday night. Hopefully won't see that again. One of those off games.

* Nervous before the game as Bruce was one of those favourite for the Brownlow. Dean said he just went out and did his best. Spent the week looking at Bruce's stats - seeing if Bruce was an inside or outside player - that sort of thing. Studying Bruce gave him confidence. Coaches gave Polo a wrap for the job he did on Bruce after the match.

* The coaches have been really happy with him this year. Dean said he tries to keep a level head and just try and go out and do his best.

* Hope we play the better footy we have this year against the Swans this week. We had mostly kids (funny him calling others kids) last time. This time they are missing a couple of players.

Greg Miller

* We wanted to put our best foot forward on Friday night as it's a huge audience. We didn't. Skill level was disappointing. Something of a record like 48 clangers - main culprits were those we'd least expect such as Browny.

* New group this year and our depth has improved so falling away in previous years is irrelevant. Losing Cogs and Newman would have been devestating in previous years but we've remained competitive - eg: Polo and White coming in and standing up. Most pleasing thing is we're getting games into the youngsters. If we make the finals then great if not then so be it.

* We'll weigh up the year at the end of the season. We will then see and judge where we are at and what we need to do. After round 1 we were wooden spoon favourites. So far this year we've had some good wins and disappointing losses.

* Underdog wins mean players are listening to the coach and feeling more as a team.

* Improvements this year - Polo, Raines, Tambling. Lots of positives.

* Feedback survey was Wallace's idea and it was a brilliant initiative. Lots of positive feedback from the players as well as useful suggestions we can take on board. No surprises with the suggestions as we were 16th in footy department spending. Gradual process of releasing the purse strings to improve the footy department - development coach to look after the younger blokes about the on-field stuff (Flea does the off-field stuff already). Eagles, Pies and Crows already have one.

* Lucky to have a good Coburg coach in Andy Collins and Coburg staff that can keep Coburg's independence yet are in tune with RFC's needs.

* Crackers Keenan article in Inside Football about Miller's future was rubbish. In for the long haul. Enjoying the challenge and his role. He's duties have settled down since the first 2 years. Doesn't need to be in the media. Francis Jackson has taken over the recruiting role while Steven Wright has been a major plus.

I occasionally catch club corner and enjoy it immensely.Andrew Kuuse is an excellent host of the show.

Most of the time im in la la land as i get up 5.15am monday mornings to go to work and so quite tired by 11pm.
