This might interest some of you
« on: September 08, 2006, 08:33:02 AM »
I posted a couple of posts on this on bigfooty and got rubbished by the bums who got all defensive but I have done some stat crunching comparing our crowd drawing to theirs in recent seasons and given the song and dance made about their million drawing seasons it makes interesting reading.

This year they drew 80,000 more than us but taking only same opposition in same ground - in other words comparing like with like fixtures - we are actually a couple of hundred a game ahead. We had no second game VS Pies. we had to go to York Park with hawthorn. We had to co to Unskilled with Geelong. In fact we were a bigger draw this year, our 22nd in 24 outside the finals

I did the same exercise for 1998, our best drawing seasason and their all time record season. On the face of it they are 7,000 a game ahead but comparing like fixtures their lead is merely 3,000 a game. We had no second game VS Carlton. We had 4 visits interstate to their 2. We had to go to kardinia. In reality, in a season in which we failed to make the finals for the 15th time in 16 years we were only 3,000 a game off the all time record attendance season.

2001: Coming from nowhere if we had had a late season VS Carlton - as of course Pies and Dons had - we would probably have topped a million.

When the scheduling advantages essendon and collingwood are given because of their success are discounted their lead over us dwindles to a few thousand a game over the past decade.

Conclusion: If we put a few decent seasons together we will draw HUGE. Even stuttering along as we are we are not for off the other 2 and were we regularly in top 4 heaven knows what would happen. If the AFL scheduled us as they do the other 2 and with success they would definitely have us playing them as well as Carlton twice a year and if we got into the "G" more often we would smash records. The stats of recent years indicate that at least.

Lads when the train really rumbles it is going to be massive.

I think we were the first club to break the million mark in a season back in the '70s.
We are a giant just waiting to happen - all we have to do is make it happen and watch this space  :thumbsup

Enjoying seeing you put Dan "Essendon is the greatest  ::)" 26 in his place on BF gaelictoigar  :thumbsup.

After 25 years of success all they have to show for it is around 3,000 more members and smaller average home crowds than we do. If those Roy Morgan figures were true then why don't the Dons have 60,000 or twice as many members as we do. After 25 years the flow on effect from kids becoming adult members should have been seen by now.

The tide is turning  :thumbsup

The Morgan figures are essentially meaningless. You, I and everyone else knows that for instance Collingwood are bigger than essendon when it comes to people putting their money where their mouth is and actually buying memberships, going to games etc etc.

Dan in enjoyable to joust with but basically he points to half a dozen million drawing years when essendon were flying, playing virtually every game in the G or Waverley, raarely travelling out of town and receiving scheduling advantages fromm the League. Big deal !! with similar circumstances Carlton as us would do the same as I've shown.

Most people are bored by this but it shows how crucial a successsful couple of years are in reestablishing ourselves wehere we once were.

With success comes schedule adcvantage and increased membership adn those 2 factors push a club into the high earning million drawing territory we want to be in.

I couldn't agree more gaelic. We had the highest ratings for Friday Night footy this year, 3rd biggest attendances overall and 2nd biggest home crowds and crowds at the MCG second only to the Pies. The signs are good that we can reestablish ourselves as a big club again but we won't get the full benefits (better fixtures, more games at the 'G, large membership etc) until we start playing finals regularly.

Consistency is the key. No point the occasional break out year like 2001 because to a large extent membership sales are determined by expected performance for the season ahead which in turn is decided by real performance the season before. Equally 2 or 3 years outdrawing everyone but the pies at the "G" would see the likes of geelong or the hawks want to play us in melbourne where the capacity is instead of little kardinia or yark Park. They aren't going to cut their own throats.
