2006 AFL Draft Camp

Young talent's times get more testing
Emma Quayle

October 4, 2006

DRAFT prospects will be given a more rigorous job interview than ever at this week's annual draft camp, with a new sprint test and three new psychological evaluations to give clubs extra information on their AFL potential.

A repetitive sprint test — where players run 30-metres six times, with a 20-second break — has been introduced, and the AFL willtry out the three written, multiple-choice psych tests.

The first test looks at the players' ability to manage pressure, make sense of confusing situations and respond to pressure while sticking to team rules; the second looks for "emotional intelligence" and their "personal, emotional and social competencies"; the third is designed to help clubs assess how a potential draftee would respond to criticism, manage negative emotions, handle mistakes and fit in with teammates.

The AFL's national talent manager, Kevin Sheehan, said the league had decided to use the Australian Institute of Sport-run tests because the group invited to the camp, which starts in Canberra today, was considered the most talented batch in a long time.

"We're going to try them out in conjunction with the AIS, who are doing a lot of work in talent identification. Because we've got a very high-level group coming in for draft camp, based on football ability, we thought we'd look at what more these tests can tell us," Sheehan said.

The camp will give recruiters another chance to separate some of the prospects, with No. 1 contenders Bryce Gibbs, Lachlan Hansen, Scott Gumbleton and WA ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, all to attend. A record 13 Queenslanders will be tested.

On average, 48 of the 72 players screened will find AFL homes at the national draft next month, with another 11 or so to come from screenings at separate sessions in their home states.

Depends if he can play footy as well as run fast. Riesbieth (sp?) was the fastest at last year's draft camp but was only picked up as a rookie and I think has now been delisted.

Re: 2006 AFL Draft Camp - Matt Burgin on SEN
« Reply #5 on: October 05, 2006, 08:47:31 PM »
Matt Burgin from afl.com.au on SEN

Burgin didn't say much in terms of times and results from the camp today.

* Wallace (overseas) and Worsfold not in Canberra but every other coach is. All recruiting managers present.

* Burgin spoke about the increasing number of Qlders at the camp and tall ones to boot. Tippett for example didn't play footy until 2004 coming from a basketball background.

* Hard to predict top 10 until after trade week. Mentioned David Armitage, Ricky Petterd and one other I missed. Might have been Mackenzie.

* Kelly, Batsanis (sp?), Goldstein although not at the draft camp will come into contention after starring for Oakleigh in the U18 GF.

* Today - vertical leap and sprints. They are still collating the results as we speak. No records broken today according to Burgin. Tim Houlihan best with 15.04 in beep test. 189cm defender with athletics background. Rischbieth last year got 15.08.

* Burgin has personally spoken to Gibbs, Hansen and Selwood. Said they were excellent young men and clear standouts in many areas.

* Skills session and 3km time trial tomorrow morning.

Eade pumps up prospective draftees (The Age)

Eade pumps up prospective draftees
The Age
October 5, 2006

Western Bulldogs coach Rodney Eade says the professionalism of youngsters at the annual AFL draft camp increases every year.

Eade, along with many of his AFL coaching colleagues, are at this week's camp to watch 72 of the most talented prospective draftees being put to the test at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS).

"They have been through AIS programs before and they're fully aware of what is expected of them," Eade told AAP today.

"You see them walking around from (training) station to station with their own water bottles. They're preparing well, even a lot of the guys here have bought new shoes so they don't slip.

"So it's just the little things, we can see that they're preparing exceptionally well which I think is where footy has gone."

Despite the changing nature of the draft, the Bulldogs formula remains the same.

"Our basic philosophy is always to take the best player available," Eade said.

This year that player looks to be South Australian Bryce Gibbs.

This morning Gibbs and the other draftees were put through a string of drills to measure their jumping, running and stamina.

AIS physiologist David Pyne coordinates the drills and says several of the AFL clubs have asked for data on players' stamina.

This year, for the first time, each player went through six 20-metre sprints with only a 20-second break between each sprint.

Another exercise called on the draftees to dart between a series of awkwardly configured points - testing their ability to change direction and keep running.

For the record, Gibbs ran the course in 8.38 seconds and took a little over three seconds to run 20 metres.

Nathan Krakouer came close to breaking Danyle Pearce's sprint record yesterday as the 72 draft camp attendees notched some impressive results.

Krakouer, who called his cousin Andrew for some draft camp advice last week, ran the 20-metre sprint in 2.83 seconds, ahead of the Northern Territory's Nathan Djerrkura (2.90) and onballers Shaun Grigg, Brock O'Brien and Clint Benjamin on 2.92.

Pearce clocked 2.79 two years ago.

Tim Houlihan, a Ballarat midfielder who has a distance running background, ran a 15.4 beep test, as did Simon Hogan from Geelong and Shane Edwards, a North Adelaide onballer.

Likely No. 1 pick Bryce Gibbs will run his beep test at a state screening session in Adelaide next weekend. Gibbs flew home to Adelaide yesterday to attend last night's Magarey Medal function.

Agility
1. David Armitage - 7.88 sec

Shuttle Run (Beep test)
10. David Armitage - level 14.03

Three-km time-trial
10. David Armitage - 10:36 mins

Notice Armitage has been moving up in the phantom drafts in recent weeks and his camp results don't look to have done him any harm. Anyone here rate him as a midfielder?

Also who is Simon Hogan? Is he more a athlete? Houlihan is a underage 3000-5000m athletics champion so that's why he the time trial easily.

Wish we could get the Roos pick 3. Hansen sounds like a gun. KPP in the top 10 for the shuttle run  :o.
