We've talked about the guys on the edge before trade week so probably a good time to review how the others went and where they are at. First up is Newy.

How did you rate Newy's year up till he sadly broke his leg against the Pies and how do you think he will go in 2007?

Showed a lot when he had run with roles rather than being on the last line of defence in the back pocket against twirps like Milne where IMO he really struggles.

Terrible when he went down against the Pies - thought till that point he was having his best season -just watched the Dreamtime at The 'G game where he played on Hird and beat him  :clapping

Kicks too short.  He is actually a beautiful long left foot kick and doesn't use it enough/at all.

So he's only a 30 to 40 meter player rather than a 60 to 70 meter player.  Does not take risks.  This is an issue coming out of the backline in teh TW game plan.

I struggle to work out if he is quick or not.  I've seen him taken to the cleaners speed wise at times and then at other times keep up with real speed merchants like Eddie Betts.

Strong overhead and can go and win his own pill.  Seems to have solid endurance and does not get lost in traffic.  Is prepared to run past and receive a handball, though by only following up with a 20 meter chip kick this level of effort can be wasted.

a year to forget for newie  was his usual brilliant self until the break but TW will be cautious in bringing him back to soon ala brownie
may even see #1 in a different role as he find his feet again, definitly a permanent team member as we press for the flag

The IR game last year showed Newy has pace when he ran back to nail an Irish guy on the run near goal.

I think Newy like Browny last year will play some games but won't be back properly until 2008.

MT,

Yeah I've finally seen that footage as well.  So yes, he can be quick, but IMO he doesn't always show it.
