It's cruelly ironic that Joel Bowden's arrival as an elite footballer coincided with a lean period on the field for Richmond, but the Tiger veteran is confident that his and the team's fortunes are about to link up and reach new heights.

All-Australian honours and best-and-fairest medals have come his way in recent years, but his 213 AFL games have included just three finals matches that all came in the 2001 finals series where the Tigers fell to eventual premiers Brisbane.

But that's ancient history now according to Bowden who says the coming season is being greeted with the kind of buoyant optimism that hasn't been in evidence at Punt Road for some time.
