A YOUNG Coburg Tigers side gave Richmond some hope for the future with a thumping of the experienced Box Hill Hawks in Round 14 of the VFL yesterday.
The Tigers were led by Alex Gilmour – the Tigers' first pick at No. 21 in last year's national draft – who kicked seven goals playing half-forward, full-forward and on the ball.
Coburg coach David Flood said his nimble side was Richmond's bright future.
With Tiger Matthew Rogers retiring, and injuries to Rory Hilton and skipper Wayne Campbell, several youngsters staked a strong claim for senior selection this week.
Of Gilmour, who turned 18 a week ago, flood said: "He marked the ball beautifully, and kicked the ball really well. He was lively, and he was a class act today."
Andrew Raines, son of Richmond premiership centreman Geoff, and Thomas Roach, son of Michael, played with freedom on each wing.
"Both used their pace and their skill level really well through the midfield, and are giving the team a lot of excitement to use the ball well, to run, to take a few risks.
"They really add some excitement to our team and that is what we are trying to generate."
Year 12 Carey Grammar student Daniel Jackson, taken at No. 53 in last year's national draft, was given the task on Nick Holland and held the veteran Hawk to two goals.
"He's just enthusiastic, takes the ball hard, really plays with some vibrancy, and is a good kid – he wants to learn," Flood said. "I think he has a huge future with the Richmond Football Club.
"I'm really excited about some of these guys."
Another famous name was on show after Stephen Daniher, son of Terry Daniher, stepped up from the Coburg reserves to make his debut yesterday.
