How did you assess last Friday’s performance?

We haven’t been results-driven in terms of our pre-season preparation, but it’s still nice to get a win. I thought the major positive to come out of the game was a few of our young players really stepping up to the levels that you expect and having an impact. Lids 30 possies, Tambo solid in the middle, Patto's best game for the club, McGuane good down back, Polo good in a tagging role on Ben Johnson after 1/4 time. Meyer did well at Coburg after  playing quite well against Melbourne. Did his senior chances no harm.

What’s the plan for the rest of this week and then the lead-up next week to the Round 1 clash with Carlton?

We’ll have a light week early on and then have a fairly heavy session – almost like a game-related session – on Friday. Richo will be back. The following week’s just a normal training week leading into the opening round.

How’s Troy Simmonds progressing?

He’ll probably be fit for Round 1, but whether he’s right to play, with enough practice and game time under his belt, that’s going to be the decision that has to be made.

Carlton’s been flying in the pre-season, so it certainly shapes as a big clash of the traditional rivals in Round 1, doesn’t it?

We are very determined to have a bold showing early in the season with our games in Melbourne. It’s really important for us to get away to a solid start.

What is your overall assessment of the Club’s pre-season?

Apart from the fact that we’ve lost a few blokes with injury, I think we’ve had a reasonable pre-season. I don’t care at all about what the results say. It’s about getting game time into your players, giving guys an opportunity, etc. I think we’ve found a couple of extra players for the future of the Club over the pre-season period. To me, that’s what it’s all about. The downside is lack of continuity playing together as far as the team for round 1.
