Mike vs Carey on Richo / Mike bags Richo
« on: April 14, 2007, 01:07:39 PM »
Sheahan said today on 3aw that Richo has lost as many games for Richmond as he has won. After 13 years he should have improved his kicking.

Carey called Richo a champion. Saying he would have him in his side. The important thing is he can get the ball and is a great mark.

Sheahan replied can you call a player a champion that is such a unreliable shot for goal. 3 shots from 8.

Carey said Richo will have his good and bad days. He said in those 13 years our midfielders have failed to or can't read Richo. Often Richo would run back as forwards do to create space and Richmond's onballers have been unable to kick it to him or into his space.

Rex said Richo isn't a Carey or Brereton who will kick that crunch 30m goal on a sharp angle. He needs support from others around him in the forward line. Browny was the only one who worked well with Richo. Schulz, Pettifer and Krak don't give him that support.

A caller bagged Walls as one of Richo's former coaches. Walls replied that when he was coach Richo kicked 96 goals the most he has ever kicked. Walls said Richo is played in the wrong position. He shouldn't leave the 50 and take marks on the wing as he's not the greatest handballer or short passer.

They asked what happened to the idea of Richo bulking up and playing a Alastair Lynch style game. I thought that was under Spud in his 2004  ???. Wallace said as Richo gets older they will use him more in a Lynch role closer to goal.

It was great radio and Mike was made to look like a fool  :clapping :bow

Carey actually said the biggest problem Richo's had in 13 years is the crap deliver - take a bow Wayne :bow ;D

Gotta disagree with that bit - flashback to last week against the Swans - end of the 3rd - who kicked that crunch goal when we needed it. IIRC it was some bloke in number 12 - goes by the name of Richardson

The problem with Mike is he just regurgitates public perceptions and gets found it when you study things more deeply. Sure Richo's goalkicking is hit and miss but to say he's cost us as many games as he has won is stupid. Footy is a team sport. Our problem has been we've had woeful teams thanks to our matching woeful recruiting.

I didn't hear the broadcast but from what has been said above I would be sideing with Mike Sheahan, he is actually the one that has got it right. For thirteen years the crap delivery to Richo thesis has been his greatest justification for a poor performance. It is going to be so good for us the day he retires from the game, I can't wait.

I didn't hear it either but I have to agree with M.S. mostly.

We all know that the delivery to Richo has been bad but delevery has got nothing to do with kicking 3 from 8. This has happened many times over the years not just last night.

I also agree that he should not be out of the 50m arch. Look at posessions when we work it forward from the back 50 and if it gets to Richo then that is the final time a Tiger will touch it. He will turn it over, kick it to a contest or he might score. Imagine how some of the backmen over the years have felt watching Richo lead up towards the wing after they have fought hard to dig it out of diffence (shivers) . He is a athlete, has many skills, bleeds yellow and black but to me he is one of the reasons (and there are many) that we have had little success over the last 15 years.

I know I was one here that was not happy when he was given a two year contract towards the end of last year but I also know that I am in the minority on this subject. I would never question his commitment to the club but I just don't think it been very smart to put so many eggs in the Richo basket over the years and I am looking forward to the changing of the gaurd. Sorry but Richo has been my whipping boy for many years now (we all have one) and I don't think that will change.

Excellent comments Fluff....ive stood by richo for way too long, defended him and deflected criticism from other supporters about his performances and on field behaviour....i think my patience is wearing thinner by the year....i had to restrain myself last night once again as the eddiewood ferals heckled and jeered his misses....ive had a gutful....would rather lose by 10 goals than go away from so many games since 1994 wondering if things could have been different had richo kicked this or that goal during a game....im just sick of it.... :(
