Tiger ruin Dons' tribute match
26 August 2007   Herald Sun

RICHMOND ruined Essendon's tribute to Kevin Sheedy and James Hird tonight, beating the Bombers by 27 points in their AFL match at the MCG.

The Tigers kicked seven goals to four in the last term to win 17.17 (119) to 13.14 (92), also ending Essendon's slim finals chances.

This is the last Melbourne game for two of the biggest names in the Bombers' history, with the club deciding to end Sheedy's 27-year reign as coach and Hird to retire at the end of the season.

But it was one of the biggest names in Richmond's history who led the way as key forward Matthew Richardson took 15 marks.

Hird kicked two goals and had 18 possessions to be among Essendon's best.

The Bombers will end their season next Saturday when they travel to Perth to play West Coast.

Further souring the night for Essendon, Jay Nash and Scott Camporeale suffered serious injuries.

A pro-Essendon crowd of 88,468 greeted Sheedy and Hird with sustained applause when the two
Bomber legends walked out onto the ground before the game ahead of the team.

But Richmond quickly took the crowd factor out of the game with hard, disciplined football that belied their last placing on the ladder.

Tonight was Richmond's third win of the season.

Neither team could take control in the first term, but Hird goaled on the quarter-time siren to give the Bombers a 12-point break.

Essendon briefly led by two goals again early in the second term, but from there the Tigers steadily took control.

Richmond led by four points at halftime and only poor goalkicking stopped them from putting the game out of Essendon's reach in the third quarter.

The Tigers kicked 3.6 to 2.6 for a 10-point advantage at the last change.

Nash was hurt seconds before the three-quarter time siren, when he and Richmond's Jay Schulz flew for a mark.

Schulz landed heavily on Nash's upper back as the young Bomber lay on the ground.

Nash was stretchered off, wearing a back brace, but he was able to move his head.

Essendon veteran Scott Camporeale also suffered a serious knee injury during the second term.

Tigers rain on Sheedy's parade
12:55 AM Mon 27 August, 2007

A hard-working and desperate Richmond rained on the parade of Kevin Sheedy and James Hird, defeating the Bombers by 27 points at the MCG.

Richmond continued its strong finish to the year with a 17.17 (119) to 13.14 (92) win that featured major contributions across the board ranging from the veterans Matthew Richardson and Joel Bowden through to youngsters such as Jack Riewoldt and Jake King. The loss snuffed out Essendon’s flickering finals hopes.

The opening of the game was swamped by the farewells to Essendon legends James Hird and Kevin Sheedy. When Hird earned a disposal within 15 seconds of the start, there was an eruption from the largely pro-Essendon crowd. In many ways, it felt as if Richmond was playing interstate with 80 per cent of the sell-out crowd backing the Dons.

From the earliest minutes it was apparent that Hird and Matthew Lloyd loomed as the biggest threat to the Tigers.

But Richmond put the opening goal on the board when Matthew Richardson marked just a metre out and converted.

The Tigers matched every challenge in the early part of the game but Essendon looked like getting the upper hand as Hird and Lloyd dictated terms to their opponents Chris Newman and Will Thursfield. Skipper Kane Johnson was productive around the field and Tivendale’s raking kicks were piercing the Essendon defence.

Young Jack Riewoldt was waved to play on when taking a set shot and seemed to surprise even himself when his 50 metre roost went through for a goal. Just on quarter time, Hird gave the Bomber fans what they wanted with a goal from a mark taken 35 metres out.

The 12-point deficit at quarter time was not representative of how close the game could have been. Richmond was undaunted and had plenty of the ball in the second quarter, but wasteful shooting for goal was costly. By the time Chris Newman smoothly guided home a well set-up goal, the Tigers had drawn within three points, but Hille answered immediately for Essendon.

It was only a temporary respite. Kayne Pettifer’s sensational mark with one hand on Nathan Lovett-Murray’s head was hotly disputed by the Bomber faithful, but he made no mistake with the shot and the difference was once again three points.

Matthew Richardson added his usual touch of spice to the game when he played on after a mark to lessen his distance but the shot went well wide. Moments later the irrepressible No.12 was again in the thick of the action when hemmed in on the boundary line. He handpassed over his head to Nathan Brown who snapped truly and put the Tigers in the lead.

Richo had worn down four opponents in an hour of football and was largely responsible for his side holding a four point lead at half-time.

Richardson’s pyrotechnics continued in the third term when he marked on the point post then wheeled around and kicked out on the full. Fortuntately Brett Deledio had drifted in for a mark and goal just moments earlier then Kayne Pettifer and Greg Tivendale nipped in for two  more. The 16-point lead was the biggest gap of the night and was thoroughly deserved.

The tide seemed to be shifting Richmond’s way as Lloyd’s shot went wide and then Hird’s fell short. But then the Bomber duo set up a goal as Hird’s hooked pass found Lloyd for a goal.

Richmond had the upper hand in general play and went to the final change 10 points ahead. Jay Schulz’s big attempt at a mark resulted in his foot crashing the head of Jay Nash and the young Bomber was stretchered off during the break.

With Essendon down to 19 fit men and the Tigers tearing into every contest, it looked unlikely that the Bombers could bridge the gap in the remaining 20 minutes. Deledio zoomed through centre half-forward for a goal then Foley added another as Essendon’s defence was in tatters.

It was a win of great quality and willpower for the Tigers and the Richmond theme song rang out loud and repeatedly in contrast to the technical malfunction after the Collingwood game.

'Richo' inspires Tigers to crash Dons' party (The Age)

'Richo' inspires Tigers to crash Dons' party
Jake Niall at the MCG | August 27, 2007 | The Age

TERRY Wallace had pledged that Richmond would not be the Washington Generals, that it would not roll over out of deference to Kevin Sheedy and James Hird and play the role that the occasion had assigned it.

Wallace delivered on his promise last night. For if the occasion was all about the Bombers, the match belonged to Richmond. Hird and Sheedy were upstaged by a — how strange this sounds — more skilful Tiger combination.

And if Hird and Sheedy were the central figures of the occasion, another famed football figure — no less beloved in his own unique way — was the main character in the drama that played out before 88,000. That player was the son of an old Tiger teammate of Sheedy's — Matthew Richardson.

"Richo" kicked only 1.4 — the kind of return that has made him a scapegoat for his club's perennial failings. But last night, it was not about the goals he missed, nor the comic blunders and brain freezes — though there were a few of them. Richardson was the most influential player afield because he simply kept winning the ball — marking it no less than 15 times, disposing on 25 occasions and providing a constant bailout for the Tigers across half-forward.

Weight of possession overpowered Essendon. The Tigers — propelled by Richo, Joel Bowden, Kane Johnson, Kayne Pettifer and Brett Deledio — had too much of the ball to lose.

Fittingly, as the match swung Richmond's way in the second quarter, it was the son of another teammate from Sheedy's Richmond days, Bowden, who was the instigator. From behind the ball in his "quarter-back" role, Bowden played with the composure that Essendon lacked and seemed to re-direct the flow of the game, his younger teammates drawing confidence from his self-assurance.

Essendon drew an audience befitting a gala performance, but, as a team that had won half its matches in 2007, it is, by definition, a middle-of-the-road combination and, on recent performances, it was little more than an even-money chance last night.

Indeed, on the evidence of what transpired, far from inspiring the Bombers, the significance of the occasion seemed to have created an anxiety that brought out their fretful worst, as the clangers — especially by foot — mounted.

The bookies, with an eye on the ladder and mindful of the Sheedy-Hird factor, had made the Dons warm favourites, apparently discounting the fact that, eight days earlier, the Dons were nearly beaten by Carlton — a team with a strong disincentive for winning another game in 2007.

Hird did his part and, as ever, Essendon did not fail because its champion failed. In the first half, he was a significant figure in the match — not the dominating, ubiquitous Hird of yesteryear perhaps, but he found space and consequently, the ball. Whatever he did was graceful and, unlike his teammates, he was never frazzled or hurried into error.

At half-time, he was — for the umpteenth time — Essendon's leading possession winner. That he could not produce the fantasy finish — conjuring Essendon a victory, as he had so many times — was due more to the failings of his supporting cast than his own endeavours.

Essendon played with passion, but without much finesse. The player who most typified Essendon was Courtenay Dempsey, who was electrifying when he took off in bursts of speed, but was wont to rush and fluff his kicks. Even Matthew Lloyd, who posed a significant aerial threat in attack, was profligate, booting 4.4; significantly, he missed twice when Tigers players chased and he hurried his shots.

If Essendon was poor, injuries did not help, since, by the final break, the Bombers had only one on the bench, after serious injuries to Jay Nash — who was in hospital by the last term — and Scott Camporeale. Then Dempsey did a hamstring late in the third term.

Great occasions aren't often great matches. This was not a great match, unless you're a Tiger fan, fond of Sheedy and hoping to store a nice memory from a hitherto dismal year.

BEST
Richmond: Richardson, Johnson, Deledio, Moore, McGuane, Newman.
Essendon: Lovett, Dempsey, Lovett-Murray, Hird, Stanton, McPhee.
