Richmond has reprimanded its injured club champion Mark Coughlan and out-of-form defender Ty Zantuck after the two were involved in an incident on Saturday morning outside the Boutique nightclub in Prahran.

A police spokesman confirmed to The Age that a chase involving a police van and a group of partygoers on foot had occurred after a drunken incident involving AFL footballers between 4am and 5am on Saturday. He emphasised that no charges were laid and that the group had disappeared after the van had tried to apprehend some nightclub customers around Chapel Street after a scuffle outside the same club that Hawthorn's Danny Jacobs and Lance Picioane had visited the previous week.

The incident took place less than 24 hours after Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison had officially warned senior players about the dangers of staying out late and drinking in public in the wake of the Hawthorn dramas last week.

Hutchison told The Age: "They were out late and they shouldn't have been and we're disappointed about that, but we're satisfied that they weren't doing too much more than that."

Coughlan, the 2003 best and fairest, has a serious pubic injury and is being rested indefinitely. Zantuck was dropped for the round-six game against Hawthorn and would have been playing in the VFL if Coburg had not had a bye at the weekend.

The pair had attended the Essendon-Bulldogs clash at Telstra Dome with Hutchison and Richmond assistant coaches Darren Crocker and Wayne Brittain before going out afterwards.

The police spokesman said: "If they headed off, it wouldn't necessarily mean they were doing much wrong apart from being drunk in a public place. Perhaps it was just the environment at the moment which could have prompted them to run off."

Hutchison said he had addressed the senior group "because we have to be constantly mindful of all these issues". "We have a terrific sponsor in the TAC and this sort of behaviour is a big public issue at the moment".

He added no decision had been made regarding disciplinary action against Coughlan and Zantuck, both 22, who were interviewed yesterday by club officials.

"We've returned from a Sunday game in Sydney and the match committee today has been concentrating on the review," said Hutchinson, "and then we've got a game coming up against the Western Bulldogs. We're concentrating on that."

Hutchison said the police had not contacted the club after the incident. "I found out in an indirect way, as we all do."

For the average joe in the street big deal however not a smart move by either of them. Especially by Ty after just getting dropped as a kick up the backside to him to get real about his footy ::). Not a good sign to the Miller and co that you've taken on board your demotion and want to be a committed, mature and professional AFL player.

It's a pity they cant have a social life as well as a career. There is always some fathead trying to make a man of himself and picking a fight. It's a dangerous mix, fame, youth, alchohol, good looks, money and male hormones. :P Maybe some of the posters on here can give us a first hand view of how it is to live like that??? :D

I heard a caller on SEN this morning who said that he was involved in the incident and he proceeded to put forward what happened.  I think we all need to take what he said with a grain of salt, because he didn’t sound all that convincing.  He attempted to diffuse the situation, tried to put across that there was nothing in it and that it was a case of misunderstanding.  As I said, he didn’t sound all that convincing and would have been better off saying nothing at all.

The police would probably be able to verify the validity of what he said, but he suggested that the incident occurred around 3.00am.  That’s not what Caro’s report says.

He said that he and Ty had played at Coburg together and they were just talking.  There was some arm waving going on and his mates thought there was a fight on so they came in to help and Ty’s mates came in to help as well.

He also said that Cogs and Kayne Pettifer were about 10 metres away from the incident.

Didn’t any of these people see or learn anything from the Danny Jacobs/Lance Picioane scenario?

The whole thing sounds like nothing much and, in the past, would probably never have received the amount of publicity it has now, if any.

Even so, can’t get away from the fact that a potential Club leader put himself in that situation.

I guess some people need to learn the hard way how to go about things.

That's what I found most disappointing too. The person most believe will be a future Captain.... :-\

When I first heard it one the news this morning and they said 2 Tiger players before they said any names I thought if Ty's involved - Cog's would be there too. Unfortunately. :(

Ty Zantuck is nothing but trouble and a bad influence, one would think campbell would pull the kid aside (Cogs) considering they live together.

ROFLMFAoff boys.

LMFAOOO@taking off so they can ditch what's in their pockets.
LMFAOOO@Pettifer being away from the action.
LMFAOOO@Zantuck getting plenty of kicks and plenty of the pill at nightclubs.

What's really a cause for concern is that they are going to the same night clubs Hawthorn players are going to. That's bad news in my opinion.

Double whammy for Zantuck
12 May 2004

RICHMOND'S Ty Zantuck faces an automatic $500 fine for missing an AFL Auskick clinic on Saturday morning.

That will be on top of the sanction the Tigers impose for Zantuck and 2003 best-and-fairest Mark Coughlan being involved in an incident outside a nightclub in Prahran.

Coughlan and Zantuck reportedly were pursued by police after a drunken incident between 4am and 5am on Saturday, but no charges were laid.

Tigers football manager Greg Hutchison had previously warned senior players about the dangers of staying out late and drinking in public.

Last night Hutchison said the fact Zantuck had also missed the AFL Auskick clinic was extremely disappointing.

"We've got an obligation to go and do the right thing by the local kids in the areas," Hutchison said.

"It was an AFL Auskick clinic and it was extremely disappointing from the footy club's point of view and also for those kids that he didn't turn up."

Hutchison agreed Zantuck missing the clinic had compounded his indiscretion at the nightclub.

"It's certainly not going to help him," Hutchison said.

"We pride ourselves on being able to represent ourselves very well in the community and get out there, and all our players have done a terrific job in getting out there.

"But unfortunately this one was no good from Ty on this occasion."

As well as the set penalty of $500 under the AFL's Collective Bargaining Agreement, Zantuck, 22, faces further sanctions from the Tigers.

But Hutchison said the details would remain private between Zantuck and the club.

"He's playing in the VFL and I think that's a big enough penalty for him at the moment," Hutchison said.

"He wouldn't be feeling too happy with himself at the moment because he prides himself on being a good player."

Coughlan, 22, has a serious pubic injury and is being rested indefinitely by the Tigers.

Zantuck disciplined
By Peter Ker, Mark Fuller

Richmond will not consider Ty Zantuck for senior selection this week after he was involved in a late-night incident outside a Prahran nightclub on Saturday, then missed a junior football clinic he had been expected to attend on Saturday morning.

But reigning club champion Mark Coughlan is yet to be penalised by the club, despite being with Zantuck outside the Boutique nightclub after 3am, and being caught up in the incident that resulted in police being called.

The club has not fined any of the players over the incident, revealed yesterday in The Age, but may consider further punishments when the match committee next meets.

The Tigers, however, are unlikely to follow the Western Bulldogs' player-curfew model despite being "frustrated" by the actions of Zantuck, Coughlan and a third player - believed to be Kayne Pettifer - who left the nightclub earlier in the evening.

As punishment, Zantuck this week will train and play with Coburg Tigers. "That's disappointing from his point of view," said Richmond football manager Greg Hutchison. "He is going to be eliminated from senior selection this week. We need all our players available for selection, particularly a quality player like Ty."

... Hutchison said the club would continue to trust its players rather than impose curfews. "We haven't discussed a curfew; we expect our players to behave accordingly," he said.

"The problem is if you start putting curfews on people and they break the curfews, then you've still got the same result as if they are out late at night anyway.

"We trust our players to do the right thing and on this occasion we got a couple of blokes who did the wrong thing."

Hutchison said Richmond would not punish Coughlan in the same way as Zantuck because he was sidelined indefinitely with injury.

"Mark Coughlan will be treated a little bit differently . . . he is in a situation where he is returning from injury so it doesn't impact upon him in terms of selection," he said.

Hutchison did not name Pettifer, but confirmed that a third player had been spoken to. "There was another player there and he left a fair bit earlier. He understands he shouldn't have been out that late at night; even though it was a weekend off he still had a training session the next morning," he said.

Hutchison emphasised that unlike the Hawthorn players sanctioned for being out late at the same venue last week, Zantuck and Coughlan were neither drunk, nor involved in any illegal activity.

"They've done nothing wrong other than just being out late at night," he said.

Coburg didn’t play on the weekend, so why would he come into consideration this week, if he wasn’t considered the previous week after kicking six goals? :-\

Actually, he was considered, he just wasn’t selected to play.

And I suppose, even though Coburg didn’t play, someone might come in if a player doesn’t come up, or it’s a match up thing.
