Clash of coaches
Herald-Sun | June 02, 2008 12:00am

THE inner-city rivalry runs deep between Carlton and Richmond, but it was usually kept among the players.

In the 1980 qualifying final, opposing coaches Tony Jewell and Peter "Percy" Jones nearly came to blows in front of 80,000 fans at Waverley Park.

The game had plenty of early spite after Richmond's Graeme Landy cleaned up Carlton rover Ken Sheldon.

Jones stormed on to the ground at the first break, making disparaging remarks about former Carlton motivator Rudi Webster, who had joined the Tigers.

Jewell, a rough and rugged defender as a player, approached Jones to let him know he was upset, and the two big men clashed physically.

Although no punches were thrown, a feisty push and shove developed before officials separated the pair.

The Tigers went on to win the game by 42 points on their way to a devastating Grand Final win against Collingwood.

That was the only season Jones was in charge of the Blues. He was replaced by David Parkin for Carlton's successive premiership triumphs of 1981-82.
