Summary

* Disappointing against St Kilda. We had worked on aspects of our game and didn't deliver them. Good signs against Melbourne though.

* Melb game - wasn't personnel changes. More style and we didn't turn the ball over like against St Kilda. Tried to back ourselves  more.

* Our disposal under pressure killed us last year, The coaches have driven that message over summer. Disappointing we didn't do it against the Saints but good signs from the other night.

* Felt for Maguire when he broke his leg. Had to turn off the tv. Made him cringe. Got the confidence back now and can at least watch that sort of thing but still feel for Eduardo.

* Didn't have any problems with leg last year. Lucky with a clean break. Hopefully nothing happends now and it's strong as ever.

* Excited about being made VC. To be voted by the peers is/was important to him. Still learning but enjoying the role. Will help assist the younger guys.

* Rainesy is copping it for being CLEO Bachelor of they ear. All pics being pinned up on the board to mock him. He's taken it seriously (laughs). Good looking family (laughs). We try to bait him and stir him up.

* Competition for places is getting fiercer. Players do feel that heat and step it up to impress. Depth is something we've lack in previous year but we have it now. Hard decision for the coaches to decide who runs out in round 1.

* Focus has been definitely round 1. Crucial for confidence with so many young players. Last year when we lost the close ones early it deflated the side week by week. Not getting the reward for effort. Geelong game hit big time. A win will get us off to a good start to take it from there.

* Wallace not quiet within the club. The whole club has shut up shop. Time to stop the talk and deliver. We've focussed on what we have to do internally and just let the rest take care of itself.

* Lids can play anywhere but suited more forward. Strength (bench press) and speed is phenomenal. Capable of breaking the game and have a big one this year. Club is obviously trying to not put pressure on him. Tagging is something he had to get through mentally (he spoke to a lot of people) and got better as the year went in newy's opinion. It's something that won't go away so he has to get use to it.

For the record Schwarz has us finishing 12-13th and Francis Leech 14-16th.

A Caller rang up saying Polo and possibly Tambling will be the big improvers. He also said we the supporters are here waiting and the coach that finally delivers, whether that be Wallace or not, will become a hero and legend of the club.

Newy clearly saying there the blame rests with the players' skill or lack of it rather than the coach.

Sure beating Carlton will give the whole club a boost but one game shouldn't dictate the rest of the season.

Newy also said Lids will have spells in the midfield as well as playing up forward. I'd rather we use Lids the other way around - in the midfield with spells up forward.

Richmond defender Chris Newman has become one of the AFL’s elite backline players over the past 12 months, which is all the more astonishing given the 25-year-old sustained a broken leg against Collingwood in Round 13, 2006.

Newman was tipped to miss the bulk of 2007 with the injury, but recovered well enough to play all 22 home and away games for the Tigers and finish eighth in the club’s best and fairest award.

The left-footer told SEN radio in Melbourne on Wednesday afternoon that his leg had fully recovered from the shocking break and he had not experienced difficulties like teammate Nathan Brown who suffered a similar injury in 2005. 

“Over time you get the confidence in your leg and you put so much work into it that you just have to back yourself in,” Newman said.

“It’s really surprising actually how good it is feeling and how good it felt last year.

“I think I was really lucky with my break, it was really clean and it just went straight back together.”

Newman was made vice-captain of the Tigers at the start of this season (with Nathan Foley) and added that the team that finished last in 2007 was simply looking at 2008 on a week-to-week basis.

“I don’t want to make any bold statements and I don’t think we can,” Newman said.

“I think the whole focus over the preseason period has been Round 1 and obviously get the year off to a good start is really crucial for us.”

Newman has played 111 games for the Tigers since making his debut in 2002.
