Tigers breed new cub
26 August 2004

IT WAS hard for club scouts to get a grasp of just how good Queenslander and now Richmond recruit Andrew Raines was leading into last year's national draft.

The son of legendary Richmond, Collingwood, Essendon and Brisbane centreman Geoff was the Tigers' smokey, taken with great faith by the club at No. 76.

The 18-year-old had his 2002 season interrupted by injury, and while on the comeback, did not live up to his billing as one of Queensland's best young players in last year's national under 18 championships.

However, the Tigers were impressed by what they saw of Raines with Southport and in the national carnival to make a long-term investment.

And well ahead of schedule, the Tigers will unveil Raines against Sydney at the MCG on Saturday.

Richmond had used its father-son selection to take Tom Roach, son of Michael, feeling secure that other clubs would not be tempted to draft a player such as Raines who they knew little about.

Football director Greg Miller said he and Raines' father, who played 134 of his 254 senior games with the Tigers between 1976-1982, shared a realistic forecast for the promising youngster.

"His father and I spoke at the end of last year and we thought he'd spend a fair bit of this year in the under 18's, but he's proven us wrong. He's developed quickly, and he's been very, very good in the VFL," Miller said.

Described as a "beautiful mover" with great acceleration by AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan, Raines was just 76kg when drafted. He has since added 8kg to his frame, and has exceeded his club's expectations by playing the majority of his season with the Coburg VFL seniors.

Miller said he hoped Tigers fans would turn out on Saturday to witness the debut of one of the club's future stars.

"He shows great courage, and he's been very consistent," Miller said.

"A couple of weeks ago, for example, he played a great game on Brock McLean, one of the early draft picks."

Legend's son to get a run with Tigers

Richmond will give Andrew Raines, son of club legend Geoff, his first AFL game when he is named in the Tigers' team to take on Sydney on Saturday.

Richmond football director Greg Miller said Raines' form for the Coburg Tigers in the VFL during the past two months had warranted his promotion.

Miller said Raines, who was picked at No. 76 in last year's draft, had an exceptional game against Melbourne's No. 5 pick Brock McLean a few weeks ago.

"It's a fantastic achievement for a young guy," Miller said. "We took him very late in the draft and we were probably the only club that thought he had the potential."

Raines' manager, Rick Olarenshaw, said he had not thought Raines would make his debut for the firsts this year, but the 18-year-old had shown great form since he had added bulk to his frame.

"He's very clean, very well balanced and he's got a bit of class about him," Olarenshaw said. "He never looks rushed."

Olarenshaw said Raines, who plays on the wing, was a very similar player to his father, who was excited about his son's debut.

"Geoff's done a lot in footy but he's still as excited as any other father I've spoken to see his son play his first game," Olarenshaw said.

Any news on Tuckerbag? :-\ :-\

om21, this is from a run down on the young players at Richmond, done by Darren Crocker, from OETT, might explain some things about Tuck:

Quote
Shane Tuck: Has a way of finding the football, but his strength also is his weakness and needs to put more time into his direct opponent, something that he has been working on throughout the season. Also must continue to work on having more purpose with his disposals, even though he has the ability to get boot to ball quickly, or to get his arms free to dish off. Is a nice size for a midfielder.

Thanks for the note TS......my only concern is time is running out. He is now 22 (?) I beleive...I just hope he can be part of the new generation. I just love his running style....reminds of the Red Rooster walking to the ring before his match with Mr.Perfect at SummerSlam 88.

Heres hoping that Andrew can give us the penetration with his foot delivery that his old man did. God Richo would be mouth-watering if he had the delivery from Junior that Roach got from senior.

Can’t say I remember that moment om, but I think I know what you mean. :thumbsup

I’d say you’re right that time is running out for him.  He’s probably got another season to prove himself at AFL level.

Good luck to Andrew Raines.  If he keeps improving the way he has this season then there’s no doubt he’s got a pretty good career ahead of him.  :thumbsup

Raines soaks up senior experience
2 September, 2004
Tony Greenberg
richmondfc.com.au

Richmond’s Round 22 debutant, Andrew Raines, believes the experience he gained in last Saturday’s match against the Sydney Swans at the MCG will prove a valuable boost to his playing prospects for next season.

“The pace is really fast and you certainly know what the fitness level requirements are like because there’s a hell of a lot of running around there,” said the 18-year-old son of former Tiger champion centreman, Geoff Raines.

“It was just a really good experience and something to build on for next year. I will now go through the pre-season realising exactly what’s required at senior level . . .

“I’ve put on a bit of weight this year, but I suppose I have to put on a bit more to play consistent senior footy.

“All in all, it was a very good experience for next year.”

Raines, who was taken at pick 76 by the Tigers in last year’s AFL National Draft, made excellent progress throughout his first season at Punt Road.

“I really didn’t expect to play this year,” he said.

“They (the Club) wanted me to develop this year, just in the VFL,” Raines said.

“But I took the next step and was fortunate enough to find a bit of form and get in the best players a few times at Coburg.

“Then, Danny (Frawley) gave me a call during the week and said: “You’re playing your first senior game on Saturday, against the Swans. And, it was a big thrill – definitely!”

Naturally enough, Raines’ family also were thrilled when they heard the news . . .

“I called my father and my mum straight away and they told me they had absolute faith in me to do the Yellow and Black proud,” he said.

“All the family came down (from Queensland) and their support was great.”

Raines spent most of the first quarter on the interchange bench, but was grateful for the few minutes of game time he did receive in the term, which allowed him to settle his nerves.

“It was good to get on in the first quarter. If I had to wait for the quarter to go by and then come on in the second quarter, the nerves might have been still building up,” he said.

As it turned out, Raines’ first kick in the big time led to a Tiger goal – one of only six scored by the team for the afternoon . . .

“Joel Bowden passed it to me and I kicked it up towards ‘Richo’ and then ‘Cogs’ got the free kick and scored a goal. So, that sort of cooled the nerves a bit, getting that first kick straight away.

Raines finished with match stats of 5 kicks, 4 handballs and 4 marks in just over a half of on-field time.

In the rooms after the game, he experienced mixed emotions as he reflected on his AFL debut at the club where his father won three Best and Fairests and was a premiership hero, in 1980.

“It was really disappointing in the rooms afterwards . . . everyone with their heads down. But I guess I was sort of still on ‘cloud nine’ from receiving the good news during the week,” he said.

“I felt disappointment for the Club, the supporters, all the players, and for Danny, who had tried his heart out for us. But I was really happy to get a senior game.

“I really look forward to 2005 now . . . and let’s go ‘Tiges’.”
