And Some More Likely Types
Inside Football
November 12, 2008

AFL recruiters cast their nets far and wide these days. Ben Casanelia finds another crop of prospects beyond the draft camp ...

REECE ADAMS - South Fremantle
DOB: 19yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 80kg
"Reece played senior footy for us most of this year and was a solid contributor. Played up forward and onball and he's just a powerful lad. Strong through the hips and legs and has good dosing speed. A great kid off the field, to boot:" - South Fremantle Colts coach Neil Mildenhall

LIAM ANTHONY - East Fremantle
 DOB: 21yo Ht: 190cm Wt: 91 kg
"Liam's an onballer who played about 75 per cent of games in the senior ranks this year. He's a great finisher who finished runner-up in our best and fairest count. Just a smart player with good skills:" - East Fremande football manager Kim Barrett

ROHAN BAIL - Mt Gravatt
DOB: 19yo Ht: 183cm Wt: 78kg   I
"Rohan is a 19-year-old who played senior football for our senior side this year against Western Australia and had a fantastic year. Plays midfield and forward and has some speed. Played in the under-16 carnival a few years ago and just missed out on the under 18 side last year:" - Qld under 18 coach Mark Browning

HAYDEN BALLANTYNE - Peel Thunder
DOB: 21yo Ht: 174cm Wt: 77kg
"Hayden's a small forward who won the Sandover Medal for the WAFI!s best and fairest player. Kicked 75 goals to be second in the goalkicking, he won our best and fairest, and was equal winner of the Western Australian Footballer of the Year award. Just a very damaging and pacy small forward who takes a good mark for his size:" - Peel Thunder football manager Steve Ashton

TODD BANFIELD - Swan Districts
DOB: 18yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 75kg
"Todd has attracted some interest from clubs and our indications are he will get drafted and maybe earlier than some might expect. He's got blistering pace, he's hard at the footy and he's just a really honest player. Probably not the world's greatest skills but can still be damaging with the footy. Played from Round 14 onwards in the seniors and played in our grand final side and was one of our best players:" - Swan Districts football manager Matt Peach

JONATHAN BEECH - West Adelaide
DOB: 18yo Ht: 189cm Wt: 82kg
"Jonathan's a versatile player with a fantastic engine  ... what you'd call elite fitness that he works very hard  on. Sheer pace is perhaps not an asset but it can be worked with if someone gave him a chance. Kicks goals, can play up on a wing and works very hard to get to contests. Played senior footy after starting the year in the under 19s:" - West Adelaide development manager Simon Hughes

WARREN BENJAMIN - Claremont
DOB: 18yo Ht: 187cm Wt: 83kg
"Warren is the younger brother of Clinton, who is with Carlton. He played two games of seniors for us and the rest of the year in the Colts where he had a great year. Just a hard-at-it onballer with a very strong body. He broke all the sprint records in the state testing with a 2.76 for the 20 metres:" - Claremont football manage Steve Calder.

BEN BIRTHISEL - Murray Bushrangers
DOB: 18/8/90 Ht: 191cm Wt: 87kg
"Ben played full back for us most of the year and he's a big, strong, big, athletic kid who kicks the ball a mile. He's created some interest from AFL dubs and while he hasn't been talked about as being draftable, someone might take him as a rookie:" - Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn

JARYD BLAlR- Gippsland Power
DOB: 14/4/90 Ht: 172cm Wt: 70kg
"Jaryd won the Morrish Medal this year and I think he's a real chance to get drafted. I think he's a player who could play league footy next year if someone wanted to take him. He's a small, inside midfielder, with good skills, he's tough and hard, got good vision and just a good player?' - Gippsland Power region manager Peter Francis

CALLAN BOND - South Fremantle
DOB: 19 HT: 188cm Wt: 84kg
"Callan's a six-foot two-inch player who played centre half farward in the Colts. He's a terrific mark who presents well and works tirelessly all game. Probably two inches too small to be a key position player at the next level, but could be a third forward ar half forward flanker:" - South Fremantle Colts coach Neil Mildenhal.

TYLER BRIMACOMBE - Sturt
DOB: 18yo Ht:189cm Wt: 79 kg
"Tyler's father (John) played a few games (three) for Geelang in the 1970s. He can ruck because he's got a great vertical leap but he's probably a good old fashioned ruck-rover. Got a great motor but needs to work on his kicking - the ball just doesn't angle down correctly but it's something that can be rectified." - Sturt development  manager Steve Rechner

GREG BROUGHTON - Subiaco
DOB: 20yo Ht: 182cm Wt: 80kg
"Greg did the pre-season at Fremantle. lash year but didn't get rookie listed. He won Subiaco's best and fairest this year and took mark of the year. He's got a great leap and plays across half back, much like Roger Hayden does at Freo. He's a talent:" - Subiaco Colts coach Tim Gossage

MITCHELL BROWN - Sandringham Dragons
DOB: 8/8/90 Ht: 191cm Wt: 82kg
"Mitchell went to state screening and grew 7cm from 17 to 18 years of age. Came on in leaps and bounds this year and had a really good attitude to his football. Can play a variety of positions and has real upside. I think he might get drafted:" - Sandringham Dragons region manager Wayne Oswald

ANDREW BROWNE - Murray Bushrangers
DOB: 7/7/90 Ht: 202cm Wt: 106kg
"There has been a bit of interest in Brownie. The modern day ruckman has got to be pretty athletic and Andy is a bit slow, but he reads the play very well, he plays behind the ball well and takes a pretty good mark. His kicking needs to improve:" - Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn

ZACH CLARKE - Oakleigh Chargers
DOB: 28/9/90 Ht: 203cm Wt: 79kg
"Zach played for Vic Metro and this was his first year of full football after crossing from basketball. At 203cm he really started to develop as the season unfolded and might be a chance for a side looking for a tall, project ruckman:" - Oakleigh Chargers region manager Stephen Conole Alex Burrows

MITCH CLISBY - Broken Hill/North Adelaide
DOB: 18yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 75kg
"Mitch is a wingman/half back who performed well for NSW/ACT at the national carnival. He has great leg speed, good endurance and carries the ball very well. Played reserves footy for North Adelaide this year:" - NSW/ACT under 18 coach Danny Stevens

ADAM COCKlE - Subiaco
DOB: 19yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 84kg
"Adam won the Jack Clarke Medal for best and fairest in the Colts last year and this year played just about every game in the senior side and also played state footy for WA. Pound for pound he is the hardest footballer playing in the WAFL at the moment. Just a tough, tough midfielder who is a tackling machine. Perhaps lacks a yard of pace but has great lateral movement and a great push-off. Just physically strong and I know Richmond and Essendon are keen:" Subiaco Colts coach Tim Gossage

JAMASON DANIELS - Murray Bushrangers
DOB: 10/8/90 Ht: 182cm Wt: 77kg
"Jamason played on the wing for Vic Country. He fractured a bone in his leg late in the season so we didn't see the best of him in the finals, but he has something to offer and might be a chance." - Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn

TYSON DAVIS-NEALE - South Adelaide
DOB: 20/3/91 Ht: 186cm Wt: 80kg
"Tyson is an under-17 still who has got some of the recruiters a bit excited. Was an AIS-AFL Academy squad member last year who started this year in the under 17s and then played reserves during the season. A clever player who has plenty to learn but also has plenty of upside:" - South Adelaide development manager Alex Burrows

GLEN DAWSON - Woodville-West Torrens
DOB: 30/9/90 Ht: 185cm Wt: 75kg
"Glen played some reserves footy this year after some great performances in the under 19s. Kicked some big bags playing out of full forward in the under 19s but will probably be more of a half forward or third forward type of player. Needs to work on his fitness but has great speed over 20 metres. A real natural football with smarts with everything he does:" - Eagles' football manager Kym Ireland.    ,

CORY DELLILIO - South Fremantle
DOB: 19yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 78kg
"Cory's a clever forward pocket and a real goalsneak type. Sort of kid you don't want to play in front of  because he'll sit on your head or he'll nudge you under and be gone. If you play him from behind he's got a terrific set of hands for his size. Takes blokes on and palms them off and then kicks goals out of his arse:" - South Fremantle Colts coach Neil Mildenhall

ANDREW DUHAU - Calder Cannons.
DOB: 21/12/90 Ht: 183cm Wt: 73kg
"Andrew is a Brett Kirk clone. This was his first year of  TAC Cup football and he was runner up in our best and fairest. Andrew had a terrific season playing on the ball. He's very courageous and very hard at it and in and under all day:" - Calder Cannons region manager Martin Stillman

JAMES FARRELL - East Perth
DOB: 13/10/90 Ht: 187cm Wt: 81 kg   .
"James is the sort of player who can play tall or small depending on what's required. He's a very long kick and a strong mark for his size. One of his best assets is his ability  below his knees and he underlined his skill by kicking six goals in our Colts preliminary final win:" - East Perth football manager Mark Winnett

TRISTAN FRANCIS - Gippsland Power
DOB: 15/8/89 Ht: 181cm Wt: 77kg
"Tristan is an inside midfielder who is tough and very hard at it. Got some speed - has run under three seconds for 20 metres - and has good skills:" -Gippsland Power region manager Peter Francis.

STEVEN GAERTNER - Dandenong Stingrays
DOB: 2/1/90 Ht: 198cm Wt: 88kg
"Steven's a quick rebounding defender who had a really good on for us. He went to draft camp last year but didn't get picked up as a rookie. He got a kickin the bum early in the year when didn't get selected for the state team after training with the squad. Put some good games together and got back into the Vic Metro team so that was credit to him. I really thought he developed as the year unfolded playing half back and centre half back. His speed for that size is unmatched at TAC Cup level I reckon:" - Dandenong Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats

TOM GERMAN - Calder Cannons
DOB: 29/8/90 Ht: 178cm Wt: 77kg
"Tom is the nephew of Peter who is a hard midfielder... just in and under all game like a Sam Mitchell type. Very good at clearances and a ferocious tackler. Extremely competitive and has good pace and skills. Missed a lot of footy this year with an ankle injury sustained during the pre-season and during the year he injured a hamstring." - Calder Cannons region manager Martin Stillman

TOM GILLIES - Dandenong Stingrays
DOB: 7/3/90 Ht: 192cm Wt: 85kg
"Made the TAC Cup team of the year and had a fabulous season for us. Won our best and fairest playing all season from full back and was rarely beaten all year by any of the forwards. A really consistent player who runs sub-three seconds for 20 metres. It's rare to see a player have such a consistent year at full back in the TAC Cup." - Dandenong Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats

KANE GOODWIN - Perth
DOB: 18yo Ht: 181cm Wt: 82kg
"Kane's a ruckrover who played state under-18s this year and performed quite well. Very, quick, highly skilled and very, very elusive. One of those players who is hard to tackle and uses the ball well when he gets it. Probably one of our better chances to get drafted:" - Perth Colts coach Damian McMahon

XAVIER GOTCH - Oakleigh Chargers.
DOB: 22/5/90 Ht: 175cm Wt: 71kg
"Xavier had a great year for us and did well for Vic Metro. Came second in our best and fairest last year as a 17-year-old and came back and won it this season. A rover, small midfielder with great hands and vision:" - Oakleigh Chargers region manager Stephen Conole

PATRICK HAYES - Calder Cannons
DOB: 11/4/89 Ht: 188cm Wt: 80kg
"It was Patrick's first year at the Cannons and he played half back/wing. He comes from a hockey background and is an elite athlete who runs all day and breaks the lines. He's got enormous upside to his game given he's only played one full year of footy:" - Calder Cannons' region manager Martin Stillman.

CAMPBELL HEATH - Gippsland Power
DOB: 1/4/91 Ht: 187cm WT: 75kg
"Campbell's a 17-year-old who played half back/wing for us and has got a beautiful left foot. Uses the ball well and has got some pace. With compromised drafts to come someone mighty take a look at someone like Campbell:" - Gippsland Power region manager Peter Francis.

SAM HUGHES - Geelong Falcons
DOB: 24/6/90 Ht: 177cm Wt: 66kg
"Sam's a half forward who played state footy this year and went to the state screening test. He might be a rookie chance, perhaps. He's very quick and has good repeat speed. Probably needs to improve his kicking a bit:" - Geelong Falcons region manager Michael Turner

DYLAN JOYCE - Calder Cannons
DOB: 21/2/90 Ht: 174cm Wt: 70kg
"Dylan is a small rover/onballer who was runner-up in the Morris Medal and represented Vic Metro. A very handy left footer and similar player to Brad Gotch. Very smart around goals and a confident, small onballer. He polled in 10 of his 16 games in the Morris Medal, which is a tremendous effort:" - Calder Cannons region manager Martin Stillman

JASON LINKE - North Ballarat Rebels
DOB:15/4/90 Ht: 188cm Wt: 79kg
"Jason was unlucky not to get into the state side but had a great year for us. Is very athletic playing as a running half back/wing and runs like the wind. He'd be a chance as a late pick or a rookie given same clubs nearly picked him last year. Didn't have a great year as an 18-year-old but he has to travel two-and-a-half hours to g so he does a great job just to get there:" - North Ballarat Rebels coach Chris Maple

ANTHONY LONG - Melbourne Grammar
DOB: 17yo HT: 186cm Wt: 75kg
"Anthony is the nephew of former Essendon star Michael and while he might be an absolute smokey, if he doesn't get picked this year he'll get picked next year. There's a lot of a young Michael Long in him except he's a right footer. One of those players who always seems to have time playing predominantly as a rebounding defender. Played at Melbourne Grammar this year so he played only one game for the Northern Territory but there is a lot to like about him:" - AFL/NT game development and talent manager Jarrod Chipperfield

LUKE LOWDEN - Sandringham Dragons
DOB: 22/2/91 Ht: 204cm Wt: 89kg
"A ruckman who is a good smokey. Improved this year and given his height and the fact clubs need young ruckman, he might be a chance:" - Sandringham Dragons region manager Wayne Oswald

BRAD MANGAN - Murray Bushranger
DOB:27/4/91. Ht: 185cm Wt: 8Jkg
"I think Brad is the smokey of the whole draft. A forward who is quick, a very strong overhead mark and kicks the ball a very, very long way. A 17-year old who got a bit tired later in the year but I think he would probably play in defence at AFL level because he has fantastic chasing speed:" - Murray Bushrangers coach Phil Bunn

BRAYDEN O'HARA - Central Districts
 DOB: 21yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 81kg
"Brayden started the year in the reserves and worked his way into the league side. Played a very good game in the grand final and was very close to winning the medal for best player on the ground. Plays half forward, half back, wing, onball ... pretty much anywhere, and he's got a long raking left foot" - Central Districts development managed Scott Stevens

NATHAN O'KEEFE - Eastern Ranges
DOB: 18yo Ht: 192cm Wt: 80kg
"Nathan has gleaned a bit of interest from clubs after joining us midseason. He was with us last year and didn't make it but after playing a great interleague game for the Yarra Valley Mountain District league we invited him down and he starred. Plays full forward/centre half forward and kicked a lot of goals for us late in the season. A late developer physically who had a magnificent end to the year:" - Eastern Ranges region manager Ian Flack

JOEL PALUMBO - South Fremantle
DOB: 18yo Ht: 178cm Wt: 75kg
"Joel went to state screening and tested OK. Plays in the midfield and has extremely clean hands and awareness. He's an in-and-under sort who is clean and clever. Not overly rugged but always in the right place at the right time and uses the ball very well. He won out best and fairest last year and this year in the Colts:" - South Fremantle Colts coach Neil Mildenhall

AARON PURVES - Dandenong Stingrays
DOB: 8/5/90 Ht: 187 cm Wt: 82kg
"Aaron played state footy this year and was our hit-up forward all year. He was in really good touch early in the year but broke his wrist and came back straight into the nationals team so was a little underdone. He had a couple of great games in the run home and I expect there is a bit of interest in him:" - Dandenong Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats

HAMISH PAYNTE  - Northern Knights.
DOB: 3/12/90 Ht: 179cm Wt: 77kg
"Hamish won our best and fairest this year and had an outstanding year. He's an inside midfielder who led the TAC Cup in tackles. A very durable player who is coming off a very good season:" - Northern Knights coach Paul Satterley

JAYDEN POST - Western Jets
DOB: 5/12/89 Ht: 196cm Wt: 86kg
"Jayden won our best and fairest and tested really well at the state screening. He ran three seconds for the 20 metres and ran a good beep test. He was by far our best player for the year and I would say that among the taller players in the TAC Cup he was the most consistent. He led the league in contested and uncontested marks, he's got a great work ethic and good pace for a player that size. Good skills both left and right and he's just an all round good kid. In our last game of the year in the final he had 35 possessions and took 18 marks -it was by far the best game I've seen anyone play this year in the TAC Cup. He's just an all-round good kid." - Western Jets coach Steve Kretiuk

JACK REDDEN - Glenelg
DOB: 27/12/90 Ht:. 186cm Wt: 75kg
"Brisbane is very interested in Jack and Melbourne and Fremantle have shown some Interest. Jack's been a boarder at Sacred Heart College for a couple or years and is a midfielder/forward type. Very much an inside player who loves to feed the ball out and win clearances, which he showed during the under-19 grand final where he virtually won the game in the last quarter. Very clean with his hands and his disposal is pretty good. He broke his thumb early in the year and given his school commitments he played only about eight games for us. A quiet and unassuming lad but has a heap of potential." - Glenelg development manager Jack Redden

PETER ROLFE - South Adelaide
 DOB: 5/10/89 Ht: 182cm Wt: 81kg
"Peter is a kid we picked up from Alice Springs last year who played the 2007 season in the reserves and this year broke into the senior side halfway through the year. Plays wing/half forward and kicked five goals in one of his first league games. Very quick off the mark and very good overhead but does need to work on his fitness which let him down a little bit at state screening tests:" - South Adelaide development manager Alex Burrows

LUKE ROUNDS - Geelong Falcons
DOB: 10/2/91 Ht: 181cm Wt: 70kg
"Luke played state footy and he's a wing/half back with blistering speed. He ran a 2.82 sec for 20 metres and a beep test of 14.7 at the state screening. He's an outstanding prospect in the mould of Travis Boak." - Geelong Falcons region manager Michael Turner

TIM RUFFLES - North Ballarat Rebels
DOB: 5/10/90 Ht: 180kg Wt: 67kg
"He's an excitement machine. Lighting quick, has a massive vertical jump and good skills. Had an ordinary national carnival playing for NSW (originally from Narrandera) which was disappointing, but hopefully someone might take him late or rookie him!' - North Ballarat Rebels coach Chris Maple

TOM SALTER - Tassie Mariners
 DOB: 18yo Ht: 182cm Wt: 80kg
"Tom was co-captain of the Mariners and did well for us in midfield. A high possession winner and extremely good with his endurance. Finds the footy a lot and can run all day." - Tassie Mariners coach Andrew Mellor

HAMISH SHEPHEARD - East Perth
DOB: 28/10/90 Ht: 195cm Wt: 80kg
"He played for WA in the under 18 carnival this year and did OK. Is a versatile key position player who has very good agility for someone of his size. Kicked seven goals in one Colts game this year to underline his prowess up forward. Versatility is probably his greatest asset:" - East Perth football manager Mark Winnett

LIAM SHIELS - Eastern Ranges
DOB: 29/4/91 Ht: 183cm Wt: 79kg
"Liam was at the AIS this year and had an exceptional season apart from breaking a cheekbone playing for Vic Metro, which slowed him up a bit mid-year. Plays onball, is a good size for a midfiedler, an excellent kick and a great competitor for a bottom-age player:" - Eastern Ranges region manager Ian Flack

MICHAEL STILL - Northern Knights.
DOB: 24/3/91 Ht: 192cm Wt: 81kg
"Michael is a full forward/centre half forward who was second in the TAC Cup goalkicking with 41 goals for the year. Has one of the best set of hands in the competition and is a brilliant one-grab mark:" - Northern Knights coach Paul Satterley

LUKE THOMPSON - Geelong Falcons
 DOB: 8/2/91 Ht: 192cm Wt: 85kg
"Luke's a six-foot four kid who plays key position but can also play wing. He played state footy this year and I reckon he's an outstanding prospect. He's a 17 -year-old but because of Gold Coast coming in next year I think someone might take him late in the draft rather than wait until next year when he might be a top 20 pick." - Geelong Falcons region manager Michael Turner

JAY VAN BERLO - West Perth
DOB: 20 yo Ht: 184cm Wt: 80kg
"Jay is the brother of Nathan. He won our senior best and fairest despite undergoing shoulder surgery in the pre-season, which underlines his work ethic and commitment. Plays half back/back pocket/run-with roles and is mentally very tough and disciplined. He's an outstanding runner, he's quick, can do a job on someone whether they are tall or short and he's also an outstanding leader. A bright young man who is studying at uni:" - West Perth football manager Ryan Lasscock

DALE WALKER - Eastern Ranges
DOB: 22/2/90 Ht: 188cm Wt: 82kg
"Dale has polarised a few recruiters because he has an awkward kicking style which he has worked on really hard. His kicking is effective but it might turn some off. He's a super quick half back or wingman who runs very hard." - Eastern Ranges region manager Ian Flack

BRYN WEADON - North Ballarat Rebels
DOB: 22/10/89 Ht: 185cm Wt: 88kg
"Bryn tested exceptionally well at the state screening and topped the disposals in the TAC Cup this year. Plays as a running half back with a big, big motor, speed and a thumping kick. He's a solid unit but he broke three seconds for the 20 metres and 14.5 on the beep test. Came off a limited preparation as a 16 and 17-year-old because of injury and we gave him a chance as a 19 year-old after a good end to 2007. He might go late or be a rookie:" -  North Ballarat Rebels coach Chris Maple

MATT WELBORN - Perth
 DOB: 18yo Ht: 180cm Wt: 75kg
"Matt's been talked about a little bit by some clubs. He's a half-backflanker/winger who is very quick, has a big engine and is a penetrating kick of the ball. Played every game this year in the Colts side and was among the better players in many of the games. Tested very well at the state screening. - Perth Colts coach Damian McMahon

JACK WESTON - Gippsland Power
DOB: 3/4/91 Ht: 189cm Wt: 81 kg
"Jack's a 17-year-old who is can play on a wing or up forward and is a very good size. Kicked eight goals against Geelong Falcons down at Geelong one day and he is a real prospect:" - Gippsland Power region manager Peter Francis
