HERALD Sun football scribe Jon Ralph takes a look at the highs and lows of a memorable 2008 AFL season.

THE RISE OF RICHO

THE AFL finally learnt to love Matthew Richardson this year, with the goodwill spreading like wildfire from Richmond diehards to the entire football community.

Pushed forward in Round 4 by coach Terry Wallace in what was as much an act of desperation as a stroke of genius, Richo responded and so did the Tigers.

Who else but the big No. 12 could turn a tense Brownlow count into a comedy skit? Don't ever retire, Richo.

BEN COUSINS

Cousins lived a year that was equal parts confusing and crazy.

His year in exile culminated in cold feet instead of a long line of clubs clamouring for his services.

Eventually the Tigers came to the rescue, but they maintained the hands-off theme with their recruiting on the run.

Hair tests, media chases, paparazzi shots, staged interviews - it went on and on.

The most bizarre moment - Cousins' decision to break his silence alongside Australia's most polarising sportsman, Anthony Mundine.
