LAST weekend against Geelong was frustrating but we have to learn from it.
What we need to do is take the attitude, the desire and the commitment from last week into this Monday’s game against the Western Bulldogs.
We just have to win this week, it’s as simple as that. We’ll have a good look at the Dogs, see what they do, and see how we can beat them. We’ve all got to bring focussed minds to the game and try to follow through with how Terry tells us to play.
That’s the way we’re looking at it – we’ve all just got to come with the same mentality as we did last week and go hard. This early in the week I don’t know who I’ll be getting, but it’s usually Matthew Boyd or Daniel Cross, at least to start with.
Last week is tough to look back on - the Cats are a terrific team, and there’s no harder assignment than playing them at Skilled Stadium. And we ran them close – it’s not a bad effort to be leading them at three-quarter time – but the bottom line is that we lost, we still haven’t won a game and we’re on the bottom of the ladder.
Having said that, we did a lot of good things in a game where nobody gave us a chance. We led at three-quarter time, we beat them in contested ball, we were only three down on inside-50s, our tackles were about the same. But the thing that was probably the difference was their ability to turn inside 50s into goals.
But for us, in the third quarter, things just seemed to flow and we just seemed to win the ball because we worked so hard. Geelong didn’t get a touch of the ball until the three-and-a-half minute mark, so we were all over them early as we got into the groove and things went well.
But we have to do that for the whole game if we want to win, not just when things are going well for us. Hard work, desire, commitment – they’re what we need.
