We don't have Essendon's talent? ???
You can only play as well as your opposition lets you Mike. Just ask St Kilda's opposition each week.
Essendon, Carlton open top-eight doorMike Sheahan | July 27, 2009
Essendon suffered a costly loss to Richmond, waiting far too long to realise you must work for your rewards, no matter what you think of the opposition.
They can get ahead of themselves, the Bombers, and they did yesterday.
It was only when they found themselves four goals down with 10 minutes to play that the bulk of them slipped into work mode.
They powered home and almost pinched the points, but they're not Geelong and they can't give starts.
How did it take an entire first half for Essendon to try to shut down Ben Cousins and Trent Cotchin?
Why did it take more than three quarters for Dustin Fletcher to go to Jack Riewoldt?
Good luck to the Tigers. They have worked hard and looked more relaxed and confident since the change of coach.
Riewoldt kicked 6.1 and earned Fletcher a long time before he got him. He's always had good hands, and he kicked a lot better than usual this time.
He has more in common with Nick than a surname.
Brett Deledio was good, too. He worked diligently, had 26 disposals and kicked with his usual power and precision.
As for the speculation about Cousins in 2010. Put it this way, if, for some strange reason, Richmond decided to let him go, he would be snapped up. He and Lovett were the classiest players on the field yesterday.
There was much to like about the Tiges, principally attitude. They don't have Essendon's talent, but they were more respectful of the job at hand.
