Peter Sumich to apply for RFC job

Peter Sumich ready to take flight as chief pilot
Kim Hagdorn | June 28, 2009

WEST Coast assistant Peter Sumich has been cleared by Eagles management to mount a bid to win a senior coaching position.

Sumich is expected to declare an expression of interest in Richmond's vacant coaching job when applications close next Friday.

He could also emerge as a contender at North Melbourne in a head-hunting exercise seeking a replacement for departed senior coach Dean Laidley.

Sumich has long-standing close connections with Kangaroos chairman and expatriate West Australian James Brayshaw and his brother, Mark, who is on the Kangaroos' coaching appointment panel.

Sumich retains an ambition to win a senior coaching assignment, despite his allegiance to Eagles senior coach John Worsfold, who won a two-year extension to his West Coast appointment on Friday.

Sumich, 41, has been senior assistant to Worsfold since 2002 and handled the Eagles' blue chip midfield headed by Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Daniel Kerr and Dean Cox in successive Grand Finals in 2005-06.

Eagles chief executive Trevor Nisbett said the club would not stand in Sumich's way.

Nisbett threw full support behind Sumich in attempting to win a senior appointment while the Eagles' 2009 season was in full swing and undertaking a major rebuilding program of their player-list.

"We would be very supportive of 'Suma' if he was interested in applying for a senior job," Nisbett said.

"He has the experience of coaching his own team and great experience with building a team, winning a premiership and now rebuilding a team.

"We have no problem at all in supporting him, as we have in the past.

"There's no problem with an application going in now as there is never a good time and he has always been very committed to us."

Similar approval for assistant coaches to seek senior appointments was extended from Fremantle chief Steve Rosich.

"We would not stand in the way of any of our assistant coaches enhancing their professional opportunities by taking a senior appointment," Rosich said.

"We are pleased, though, that our entire coaching staff are all under contract until the end of the 2010 season and they are fully committed to the development of our young group and the successful steps we believe we have taken with all of our coaches performing their duties."

Dockers assistants likely to pursue interviews at Richmond and North are defensive coach Chris Scott and midfield specialist Barry Mitchell.

The Tigers have called for applications to be lodged by Friday, with plans to interview candidates over the first fortnight of July.

Richmond's selection panel, headed by Tigers general manager of football operations Craig Cameron, will also head-hunt candidates the club identifies as ideal head coach contenders.

Sumich was among the final three candidates when current Essendon coach Matthew Knights was appointed at the end of 2007.

Yep i would be interested for sure.

He has worked under Woosha and a club like Eagles who i rate very highly in almost every department.

He was assistant in back to back grand finals so yep we must seriously look at him.

Just dont like the "missing home factor" if it was to come around but then again anyone would welcome the chance to get out of that hole of a city.
Currently a member of the Roupies, and employed by the great man Roup.

Ticks most of the boxes, however the only concern I have is that he's never really experienced anything other than West Coast his entire career. After retirement he spent two years coaching South Fremantle, and lost the grand final in 2001 to Subiaco, he was then hired by West Coast. So he's also coached his own side and done pretty well so that may offset the lack of exposure to other AFL sides.

Definitely has good credentials

Eagle Sumich applies for Richmond coaching job
By Nathan Schmook 6:54 PM Fri 10 July, 2009

RESPECTED West Coast assistant Peter Sumich has applied for the Richmond coaching position but says he hasn't made a play for the North Melbourne vacancy.

John Worsfold's right-hand man unsuccessfully interviewed for the Melbourne and Essendon coaching positions in 2007, only narrowly missing the Bombers' position won by Matthew Knights.

Sumich, 40, is in his eighth season as an assistant at West Coast and said he was better suited to a senior coaching position now than he was back in 2007.

"I'm better prepared, but I thought I prepared and gave a great presentation for the Essendon job and went very close," Sumich said on Friday.

"So I'll just bowl along and see what happens. It's out of my hands.

"If I get the opportunity, just give it your best shot and that's it."

Sumich said he hadn't looked at the North Melbourne position vacated by former teammate Dean Laidley.

"That (Richmond) is something I've applied for and that's it," he said.

Sumich oversaw West Coast's revered midfield in the club's 2006 premiership and has this year taken over as forward line coach with Mark LeCras and Josh Kennedy both flourishing under his tutelage.

He is the club's all-time leading goalkicker and a dual premiership player.

Sumich also coached South Fremantle in the WAFL for two seasons before taking up his current position with West Coast in 2002.

Applications for the Richmond position closed last Friday and the club is expected to begin interviewing candidates shortly.

Seems like we have an embarrassment of riches this time for our coaching position. Much better place we are in this time round compared to when Spud was the only person willing to take on the role 10 years a go. Testament to the club for being professional and honouring coaches contracts regardless of supporters and media's efforts.

Hope we stick true to the process regardless of whatever outside sources seek to influence the process.

I love the fact there seems to be 2 or 3 of the much heralded assistants only going for our job and not giving North the time of day. We are still a big club. As for coaching rumours Hardwick is the bloke who seems to be making big inroads according to the media. Allan Richardson and Peter Sumich are also well in the action.

Not too sure if I would like Sumo here.
To me I think he comes over as too soft.
But thats just the way I see him, so I could be miles off.
I like the Hardwick selection and would be happy with that one.  :gotigers

Considering he coached and developed the West Coast premiership midfield, I'd say he's pretty well credentialled
Has also coached his own side to a grand final in the WAFL (only in the job 2 years before he was poached by WCE)

West Coast assistant coach in mix
Kim Hagdorn, football writer
August 01, 2009 06:30pm

WEST Coast assistant coach Peter Sumich will take preliminary steps this week in a bid to win Richmond's vacant senior coaching position.
The dual Eagles premiership forward and assistant to John Worsfold when West Coast won the 2006 flag will meet Tigers officials in Melbourne on Friday.

Sumich is in a field of about 15 contenders, headed by caretaker Jade Rawlings.

Other top candidates include highly rated Hawthorn assistant Damien Hardwick, Leon Cameron, Alan Richardson and Ken Hinkley.

A Tigers' subcommittee will cull a provisional list of candidates, with more interviews in a second phase.

Sumich, senior assistant to Worsfold, was midfield coach of Chris Judd, Ben Cousins, Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr in West Coast's prime finals period between 2005-07.

process is good but the time needed in ours is imho a failure of the process. it shouldnt take this long to get through 1st stage interviews.

Ramps, we are in the middle of the season. Or should i say, the business end of the season. To prepare for an interview of this magnitude needs time and effort, of which there would be little spare after working at their own clubs.

Personally Ramps I don't give a rat's how long it takes as long as the time is spent considering every available applicant with the utmost depth and intention.  The only important thing in the process is getting the right coach and they can take until October for mine if need be.  Would rather them take longer and get it right than rush it and get it wrong.

It seems to me we are timing it so we can announce it as soon as the season is finished.  Which is the correct way.
