Draft is even from 10 onwards: Francis Jackson (Herald-Sun)
« on: November 06, 2009, 06:50:15 AM »
RICHMOND

PICK 3: Dustin Martin 18 Bendigo Pioneers, midfielder, 187cm 86kg

Hard at it. Complements Trent Cotchin and Brett Deledio beautifully. Capable of playing Round 1 next year.

OTHER PICKS: 19, 35, 44, 51, 67, 72,

CLUB NEEDS: Plenty. Will surely take "best available" talent rather than recruit on a needs basis, although a key forward is a must at some stage given Richo is on his last legs.

CLUB SAYS: "We feel the draft is super even this year especially from pick 10 onwards. It is an unusual scenario this year in that Melbourne will have four picks before we have our second pick and Port will have three."
Francis Jackson, Richmond recruiting manager

Interesting that FJ should say this . Obviously the club is going to go with the quantity approach this year and hope to uncover gems regardless of their draft order. Beyond our first pick/s I think we will be looking to find players who 'could' become star players rather than players whose past form has shown they are likely to be handy players. Pure educated speculation I would guess...

This process is fine as long as the club doesn't hold onto players beyond their use by date. Give them opportunites and if they make the grade, excellent. If they show nothing within 2 yrs max we need to be brutal and cull to keep the process flowing. Any player with ability should be able to show some signs of making the grade after 2 years. Holding onto them for 3 or 4 like we have in the past will just continue to create mediocre list cloggers.

Agree in principle, however would suggest that genuine KPP (drafted in rounds 1, 2 or 3) be given 3 years and outstanding ruck prospects (drafted rounds 2, 3 or 3) be given 4 years.  Draft round 4+ midfielders given 2 years.

I'm prepared to lose a late developer to rotate the list and maintain momentum & list structure by investing in the draft.

No recycled hacks to RFC - it has not worked since Barry Rowlings FFS

Hawthorn got Brent Guerra and Fatty Dew, Geelong got Brad Ottens, these three were some of their most important players in premiership years.  I wouldn't say never, but I agree in general go for young new players rather than recycled ones.

I suppose when he says it's even from 10 onwards it really comes down to individual ratings. As Matt Burgan and EQ have said some people rate Griffiths as a first rounder and some as a 30+ pick. Some have Gysberts as first rounder others don't. The same can be said for Christensen, Bastinac, Harwood etc. I'm sure there are players In our top ten that aren't in other clubs so it not implausibleto think we could get a "top 10 pick" at  pick 19. if you get my meaning. :P
