RICHMOND midfielder Trent Cotchin says his side can still take a positive from its finish to Saturday night's NAB Cup thrashing from Hawthorn.

The Tigers trailed by more than 100 points at the last change but a late rally - in which they booted five late goals - saw them reduce the final margin to 73 points.

Speaking from Punt Road on Tuesday morning, Cotchin admitted the hurt of the loss but said fans had to be patient with the young list as it came to grips with new coach Damien Hardwick's style.

"It's pretty disappointing," Cotchin said. "We finished off on a really good note, so that helped us with our post-game interview, I guess.

"When you speak about such a young group that's coming into a new game plan and a whole new system this year, it's just good to have signs that our game plan is working.

"Whether you say Hawthorn took its foot off the pedal in the last quarter or we just started playing better footy, who's to know?

"We're just looking forward to the next game and seeing if we can continue that last quarter performance into that next game."

Cotchin, part of one of the youngest midfield groups in the AFL, said the Tigers weren't making any bold predictions about the season proper.

They're more intent on perfecting Hardwick's style than anything else.

"Our goal is to play our game plan to the best of our ability," he said.

"Hopefully one day in the future, not too far away, we do play a similar game to a Hawthorn and are that well-structured and drilled that we can just smash sides just with our game plan.

"We haven't really discussed wins at this point of the year. Where that takes us - whether it's 10 wins, whether it's 15, who knows?

"We're just hoping that we can have a bit of a game plan that delivers a good performance on match day and we can hopefully get a bit of success out of that."

Cotchin is entering just his third season at the top level but feels he is better prepared to make an impact after shaking off a persistent achilles tendon injury.

"The body feels really good … I suppose my program coming into the season's been much better," he said.

"I haven't had any problems with my achilles thus far this year and can't feel any coming on, so hopefully it all goes well."

Confident he can get through his first full season, the 19-year-old is looking forward to working with some other young cubs, including first-round draftee Dustin Martin.

Martin impressed with 26 touches on Saturday night to be his side's best player.

"He's a tremendous player," Cotchin said.

"We've got a number of young players that are coming into the system this year who have shown great attributes … they're showing good signs at this point of the year."

Some female reporter on SEN just said "Hardwick put the players through some simple kicking drills today, but many struggled to hit a target"....

They also said on SEN Cotchin pulled up well from the game. So at least some positive news there.

"It's the news all long-suffering Richmond fans want to hear - that young gun midfielder Trent Cotchin believes his body is capable of lasting the entire upcoming season.

As the Tigers' 2010 campaign under new coach Damien Hardwick got off to a disastrous start on Saturday night - beaten by 73 points by Hawthorn after having trailed by 102 points at three-quarter-time in their first-round NAB Cup match - there was some consolation in the sight of Cotchin being up and running so early into the season.

The 19-year-old, who was one of the few positives to emerge from Punt Road during the five failed years under former coach Terry Wallace, has battled Achilles problems in each of his previous two years at the club, playing only a total of 25 games."

we have to be patient with Trent as well.

can't expect him to win us matches off his own foot.

i think with Cotchin and Martin, our future is great, but for now, i can see more 12-Goal losses coming.

"defensive" - is all Hardwick said about the loss, so to me, our midfield needs to work harder.

Hardwick did say that our midfield needs to work harder defensively.

i would love it if Cotchin and Martin can play the whole season fully fit.

i think if those two can just have a fully fit season this year, they will become that 100-match player type instead of their actual matches played.

there is no doubt, that Martin is a winner and Cotchin is yet to show his true self!

Go Richmond!

Memberships/promotion.

And they can't just ignore media requests or they'll right source-less crap to fill up the bit that was meant to be a Tiger players interview.

And if our players talk crap about ourselves and our team that's just ammo for everyone to say we have a culture of mediocrity entrenched in the players minds and we have admitted the season is over before it's begun.

It's all fluff, we all know that.  We just have to take it for what it is.

Tigers a work in progress
ANDREA PETRIE
February 17, 2010

''PRETTY disappointing'' is how Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin described his side's 73-point loss to Hawthorn in the NAB Cup at the weekend.

But Cotchin said the Tigers' five goals in the final term has given the young playing group some hope as they continue to work on coach Damien Hardwick's new game plan.

''We finished off on a really good note, so that helped us with our post-game interview, I guess,'' Cotchin said yesterday.

''When you speak about such a young group that's coming into a new game plan and a whole new system this year, it's just good to have signs that our game plan is working.

''Whether you say Hawthorn took its foot off the pedal in the last quarter or we just started playing better footy, who's to know?

''We're just looking forward to the next game and seeing if we can continue that last quarter performance into that next game.''

Cotchin said the players were focused on getting the hang of Hardwick's playing style and ''play our game plan to the best of our ability''.

''Hopefully one day in the future, not too far away, we do play a similar game to a Hawthorn and are that well-structured and drilled that we can just smash sides with our game plan,'' he said.

''We haven't really discussed wins at this point of the year.

''Where that takes us - whether it's 10 wins, whether it's 15, who knows?''

''We're just hoping that we can have a bit of a game plan that delivers a good performance on match day and we can hopefully get a bit of success out of that.''

Cotchin said he was pleased with the output of several new teammates who had shown ''great attributes'', including first-round draft pick Dustin Martin, who had 26 touches in his debut match.

Tigers put on brave front (Herald-Sun)

Tigers put on brave front
Jon Ralph
Herald Sun
February 16, 2010

RICHMOND is outright favourite for the wooden spoon, but young star Trent Cotchin says the players are optimistic about the season ahead.

The Tigers endured a nightmarish start to the pre-season competition with a pair of injuries heaped upon a heavy defeat at the hands of Hawthorn.

Once an equal $4 favourite with Fremantle for the wooden spoon, the Tigers are now $3.50, with punters predicting a year of pain for the club.

The Tigers will take on the loser of Sunday's Geelong-North Melbourne clash in Yea on Saturday, February 27.

The game is being played in northern Melbourne to help recognise the efforts played by country towns such as Yea during last year's tragic bushfires.

Cotchin fought hard to find positives from the club's loss against Hawthorn, citing a last-quarter burst in which the young Tigers finally began moving the ball fluently.

He said yesterday that while it was a work in progress, the club's new game plan would click at some stage this season.

"We are confident in our game plan and the structures," he said.

"If we keep working at them they will fall into place.

"Whether it takes the next six weeks before Round 1 or the next six months, we are going to work with the structure we have worked with and hopefully that can hold us in good stead."

Cotchin said coach Damien Hardwick had been frustrated with the flat start to the game but encouraged his players had worked into the game

"He was a little bit disappointed, but he wants us to get the best out of our football and start playing the game plan," he said.

"We are working hard at that and trying to pick out the little things that will better us in the next game."

Cotchin has been held back from some training sessions this year amid talk he was still struggling with an achilles injury. But instead he was being carefully managed, with that program paying off when he moved well against Hawthorn.

"My program coming into the season has been a lot better. I have worked on keeping the strength in the calf so the achilles is stronger. Hopefully it all goes well," he said.
