Prez Peggy O'Neal on 3aw 17-10-2020
« on: October 17, 2020, 08:04:43 PM »
Peggy was on 3aw earlier this arvo with Caro, Lloyd, Matthews & Tim Lane.

* Caro began by saying when Benny Gale said 10 years ago that Richmond was aiming for 3 flags by 2020 he was seen as insane.

* Caro also added that there's jealously towards Gale within AFL HQ. They don't like it when Caro suggests it's between Benny and Essendon CEO Xavier Campbell to replace Gil. Someone within the AFL told her that it's ironic both had shocking years. Caro said it's jealously. How could anyone think Gale has had a shocking year?!

Anyway onto Peggy's interview:

* Peggy very proud to make the Grand Final. Never take it for granted.

* Saw supporters driving around Richmond in their cars with their scarves sticking out and tooting their horns.

* After the win last night she was included on speaker phone with Gale and Dimma.

* She always gets a pre-game txt from Dusty. He told her they would win.

* Gale back in 2010 said we needed stretch goals:
   - 5 years: 3 finals, $0 debt, 75k members.
   - 10 years: 3 flags by 2020.
   We're in the football business. Why not try it?

* Everybody has to do their part. Right people with the right skills. It wasn't easy. We lost three finals (2013-14-15), had to reset in 2016, lost 2018 Prelim.

* Gale back in 2010 said membership is a key to finances and it needed it's own department. It's a slow build. You don't get there overnight. We were able to bring members along with us. Members could see the plan and where we want to go.

* Covid effects?
   Early on things kept changing so quickly which is a problem for the football program which is so well planned and regimented. Took time for us to adjust. Asking how we were going to do this a new way. Up in the hub we were able to set it up so we were together.

* 2020 off-field issues?
   Always a concern when people may lose a bit of trust in what you are doing and who you are. None of these situations we wanted to happen. However, they weren't going to define us.

* Anti-Richmond commentary this year?
   People have had enough of us winning. Just apart of the theatre of footy. Physicality is also apart of footy.

* Suggestions of an independent review of the AFL?
   At companies she has been apart of they are constantly reviewing themselves. Nothing to be scared of. It couldn't hurt to have one into the AFL. Every three years at Richmond we have an independent review of the whole of the football club. They come up with new ideas which is a good thing.
