Hardwick's blueprint and modern footy trends?

Rohan Connolly's article in the Age today shows some graphics of how much the game has changed in the past 5 years. Given we've still got a couple of development years to go at least (2010-11) Dimma's "blueprint" will need to see 3-5 years ahead.

Trying to guess the trends for the way the game will be played in 5 years is rubbish. Wallace/miller took a punt that it would be full of slick runners including the modern day CHB FB. Then a team comes along & wins a flag with some big bodies not as fleet of foot(hawthorn/gelong(saints close)and suddely the blueprint changes.

bottom line You develop a gameplan that suits the playing group you have.

Yep.  Followers don't win flags, leaders and innovators do.  Look at how many times Sheedy re-invented himself over the years to stay ahead of the pack.

Yeah I just hope EVERYONE realises how long it's going to take, watch the Wallace wolves come out at Hardwick in a few years, thats part of our problem IMO. Coach's need to be given time without the wolves and most supporters attacking , media and club officials don't back them in enough.

I think 8 year terms would be great, thats what it took Bomber Thompson to get the Cats into and finally winning the GF.

That's right guys like Clarkson came up with the cluster in 08 need to come up with something new that will take the Hawks to the next level again otherwise they will stay one trick ponies.
Discipline can get you so far look at Sydney in 05-06 but you need a coach that will implememt a plan B and stay ahead of the competition to maximise your stay at the top for as long as possible.
Desire and aura can also diminish soon after a flag if the club and its players are more than satisfied with just one premiership.

What the past few years have shown is no matter how much footy evolves and changes the fundamentals of the game don't especially in the finals. You still need to be able to win your own ball, kick, chase, tackle, read the play, etc and work together as a team. Under Plough we fell away in so many of these fundamental areas of the game.

I agree with Rohan's comment that the game is becoming more like soccer. Soccer went from a simple long-ball game to one of intricate passing requiring elite (foot)skills. The tactics used coming out of the back-half are Soccer tactics whereby you set up and move the ball sideways and back again to try and outflank the opposition on the fat side (switching the play) or you hit on a quick counterattack if there's a turnover. It's all about pass and move, pass and move into space. If only Tiger players understood basic footy strategy especially from kick-ins  .

I don't think we can even blame Plough or Spud for us kicking-out straight to the opposition ruckman 13 times in a row in one quarter last week . Then again it was poor old whipping boy Jordie  .
